This morning was the first time in many years that I did not reach for the acetaminophen the minute I opened my eyes. Wow. That is something. My knee is almost pain free but the thigh bothers me a bit but it is manageable and for me that is a miracle. I have never done a big hike but I have a BIL who hikes in the mountains in CA at least twice a year. He has had many surgeries, several on his knee but as soon as he heals he is out there hiking. He cannot live without that. Of course he is 10 years younger than me. For me I feel better than I have in years. I just wish my hair would stop falling out.

1 ReactionYou will get there! Just listen to your body. I was only in my 60's after my last revisions, and it took a year to get back to where I could hike. I still can't scramble on the rocks like I did, but enjoy life from the pathway now.

1 ReactionEvery major surgery has caused me to lose hair - but after all the other healing, it seems to grow back. I just find it funny that after every major loss, it is a different color. My formerly "dirty blonde" hair is now quite dark brown in back, and gray/light brown on the front & sides. Kind of like a bad dye job 😁 So I just had my stylist make it look intentional.

Thanks, Sue. That’s encouraging.
I had a pixie haircut for 25 years. Let it grow for three years due to Covid and being in a high risk group. Had dyed my hair for almost 60 years. Now letting the gray grow in. Much to my surprise it’s not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. After major surgery my priorities have changed!
One of my friends had this happen and found out that the replacement was rubbing against a ligament causing the pain. She had the ligament clipped and then had to relearn to walk using only the surrounding muscles but the pain went away and she is doing fine now. It took about 2 years to diagnose, treat and do PT to strengthen her walking ability. Maybe have your medical team do an MRI or CT scan to if something might be impinging on the replacement device?
Hello
Of course you should do what is working for your body and its strengths and limitations. My observations are offered only as one persons experience . I believe that is the beauty and usefulness of this forum .
We are all working to achieve the same goals of pain relief and mobility and I offer up in that spirit
My way is definitely not the highway. Good luck.
The physical therapist had not encountered someone who had a complex hip replacement. She was surprised that I did not have a run of the mill hip replacement. This woman had lots of experience and a fantastic resume so I was a bit concerned. The treadmill is working very well for me. Walking is the goal and the treadmill allows me to walk safely.
I had my last visit to the surgeon in mid May. He said that full recovery would take 18-24 months and that I was doing better than expected. I am walking almost completely normally now and I can manage the type of pain I am experiencing in my thigh. If it takes nearly two years for everything to settle down then I will just wait to see what happens. I have a follow-up a year from now and if it still bothers me I will most certainly bring it up. Thanks for the info.
Hello,
Your surgeon is right on the mark with that timeline. I was in full recovery from a double hip replacement at about 18 months. I was starting to feel great and then the knees went bad and now I'm recovering from having 2 tkr in 10 weeks. I told my surgeon this better be it for awhile. Lol .. 4 joint replacements in 2 1/2 years is enough for me. I'm 54 years old and I have been dealing with OA for 7 years now. Hopefully after the knees heal I will have my life back.
