For those of you that have had palpitations, what treatments have worked best to reduce them?

I first nd Covid in January 2022. I noticed some palpitations a few months later . My primary sent me to a cardiologist. My EKG was in a normal range. They did discover I have some “leaky” valves. They were described as mild. I also had a few PVCs on the Holter monitor. The cardiologist did not want to prescribe any medication as my normal resting heart rate in in the upper 50s. I got Covid again in December 2022. I have notice since then I seem to get out of breath and an elevated heart rate with some minor activity. I developed anemia with hip replacement surgery in January. I was in iron for that and eventually my episodes of palpitations has decreased. I still have episodes of normal activity that sends my heart rate to the 90s. I am keeping records of the palpitations so that I can discuss with the cardiologist when I see him again.

I was also having trouble with heart palpitations and a slightly elevated heart rate after getting covid last summer (late June 2022). My heart rate would elevate more than usual after eating, when laying down, etc. My cardiologist said it was autonomic dysfunction caused by long covid and didn't have anything to recommend besides staying hydrated and taking electrolytes. I did that but it didn't seem to help. Then at the advice I found on one of the Mayo Clinic blogs, I gave up sugar and alcohol; that helped a LOT. I also started seeing an acupuncturist and herbalist who prescribed me Chinese herbs and taking those also really calmed my heart down.

It's a whole list of things and she tinkers with the formula based on how I'm responding to it. I'd consult with a licensed herbalist before trying anything on your own.

Mine just started in May with Covid. I was hoping it would quit waking me up. Ugh! Assuming lorazepam is prescription drug. I've had anxiety most of my life. Drives me crazy as life is good. 💙🩵💙

Sorry to hear of your heart troubles. I'm a healthy female in my 30s and developed similar issues with elevated rate and many palps throughout the day after the P jab. They calmed down (EKG, heart sono, stress test - all normal) after minimizing caffeine, sugar and alcohol. Cardiologist recommended stopping for 60 days to see improvement then add back slowly as desired. It helped but started up again after COVID positive summer. Mild covid case BUT I took antihistamines the whole time and that seemed to really help calm my bodys immune response. Mild workouts like brisk walking also helped vs strenuous exercise. Hope some of that helps and let us know if you find anything else that does!

Side note - I also developed very low ferritin (5) and had to do iron IV 2x which did help symptoms improve.

When I first saw the cardiologist last year, he recommended avoiding caffeine. I have mostly done that. I will have regular coffee very rarely. I try to limit my sugar. I must confess to enjoying a glass of wine. I take a Claritin daily for chronic sinus issues. I am 71 so sometimes it is hard to know which of my symptoms are from Covid, the vaccines or aging! Although prior to Covid I was in excellent health except for right hip osteoarthritis which limited my jogging.

@1wildt - You're right, anxiety will set it off as well. I also take Metoprolol 25 mg, either 1/2 tablet or whole. The super nice Heart Specialist at Mayo I saw in May (he was 92 yrs young, so caring and knowledgeable) agreed on this Rx. It's available also in extended release and he said you then take it twice a day if you wish.

Like many of us here, I never had racing heart that feels like it's going to jump out of my chest until I had Covid in '22. Think about more, it was happening bit prior as well, so I must have had bought of Covid prior that I wasn't' aware of. The heart goes up to 130 bpm in the morning at times and especially if I'm walking (which I love'd to do) or stepping out of a warm bath.

I pray deeply for al lof us as Jesus our Lord gets us through this.
