Has anyone been to Tampa General Hospital for transplant?
Has anyone been to Tampa General Hospital? My husband learned he needs a liver transplant and the nearest hospital to us that does the procedure is Tampa. Everyone has been great while he was there for the evaluation, but since he has been home, he has an out patient liver coordinator that is really not good. She talks down to us, she says I ask too many questions, she has told my daughter her father may not get a liver, so don't count on it. She has all but called my husband an alcoholic, which is far from the case. Just curious if anyone has encountered anything like this. This is stressful enough and I really don't need someone who is suppose to be helping to make things so much worse.

@lsheerin, I want to welcome you to Connect. As a transplant recipient, I am well aware of the stress that you and your husband are experiencing. Regardless of where a patient is being treated, it is possible to run into a care team member who is having a bad day or who does not have a patient friendly personality.
For a transplant patient, the main contact IS your nurse coordinator! Since you are having difficulty with your husband's coordinator, I suggest that you call the social worker in his liver transplant department. Tell him/her what you shared here. He deserves a coordinator who will support him.
Can your husband make the call? Or will you need to call for him?
@lsheerin
I have only visited TGH but it had a premier Transplant Unit and accommodations for the families of transplant patients. Advent Health in Orlando also has a renowned Transplant Unit and family living accommodations. My grandson was in ICU at Advent Health…amazing compassionate organization.
Although I know of no transplant patients personally, I think you can rest easy knowing your husband would be in one of the best hospitals in West Central Florida(TGH).

Thank you for responding. That makes me feel better. It’s so difficult not knowing anything about this.
Thank you!! Great advice. I appreciate it. We love the hospital, it’s just this one particular employee. I will give a call to the social worker. ❤️
Sheerin, I am appalled that you r being treated like that you need to report her to the TP Team and get someone who will comfort and help you thru this very difficult time. To tell your daughter that I would be heartbroken.
I am 2.5 LTP my team, coordinators were outstanding and that’s what you need to get you and your family thru this. My social worker to this day has always been here for me to help me w/all my questions.
Good Luck 😊💚
Thank you for your reply. Are you at Mayo Clinic? I called the social worker today, who was very nice. She said she was going to call the manager at the liver department. I really thought I may hear back from either the manager or a new coordinator, but not yet. If I don't hear anything late Monday morning, I will have to call again. Have you had your surgery yet? How are you doing?
Once upon a time, each one of us was new, too! I am happy to be one of many who are here to support you. We are all Patients who use our experience to support each other. 👍
I am happy I found this site. I wish we were all meeting under different circumstances, but it is nice to know we are not alone in this. I really wish everyone a speedy recovery and a long, happy life.
Hi, no I am not at Mayo. I had my LTP 2.5 years ago, I have had some small set backs but all in all am doing well. I hope u will get some answers and that coordinator needs to find a new position 😊😊 I hope your husband is doing ok, has he had his TP work up yet?
I am sending nothing but the best to you all💚😊
So glad you have had the surgery. My husband did have his work up and now he is waiting to be "put on the list". How long does that take? This was my big question to the coordinator. It was like she does not want him on the list. It's crazy. She has never met him and no reason not to like us, but it's as if she wants something bad to happen. I feel so lucky, because he is not sick. He's tired alot, but he takes the dogs out and chats with the neighbors. We live in a great community where the neighbors are always willing to help. I would just feel much better if he was on the list. At least at that point, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
