Every day I cough up what looks like a scab with ugly mucous and blood

Posted by needtoknow @needtoknow, Feb 10, 2016

Every day I cough up what looks like a scab with ugly mucous and tiny amounts of blood. It seems to come from the back of my throat or nose. My doctor has seen the scab but does not see anything wrong. This, to me, seems really odd. Has anyone had this problem?

I have recently started having this same strange occurrence and I’m also having some pains in my left chest my dr seems to think it’s something to do with acid reflux he started me on a pill to take everyday 30 min b4 eating and says it takes a month to work, while I’m coming up on a month there doesn’t seem to be any change whatsoever. I realize your post was in 2016 did you ever find out more info?

Just an other scab, I have to get them out every day, sometimes i get it out after gargling with saline solution and also using Neilmed sinus rinse bottle to flush my nouse.
Agreed to surgery to scoop the pocket where adenoids are-at the same time my ent is not sure it will help, but at least I give a shot,

This is the exact thing I keep trying hack out of my sinus every other day! But I’m having some pain in my chest not sure if I pulled a muscle trying to hack it up or something more serious. I didn’t realize how difficult it is to breathe until I went to get vaccinated and had to do some walking after a year of quarantine and taking care of everyone else, I now realize that I haven’t been getting any exercise and gained weight and I’m so out of shape so now I’m like is it hard to breath because I’m out of shape or because something very serious is happening????? So Worried here!!!!

It may be way to late but hopefully you can see this and let me know how you are. The same thing has been happening to be for the past couple of years. It seems to get better in the winter and once spring comes around, it gets bad.
The closest someone has been able to explain to me was one ear nose mouth doctor. She says it’s some type of crusting on a node (I can’t remember which one) due to antihistamines or something like that. I’m going to look more into it because it is seemingly getting worse for me.
I hope that you’re better.

Welcome @violetsmom. Getting worse in the spring might indicate an allergy-related cause, which it sounds like you and your doctor are pursuing. I found this article that describes several possible causes.

- What’s Causing Scabs in My Nose? https://www.healthline.com/health/scabs-in-nose

Do you live in a climate where spring brings pollen and allergies? You mention that your situation is getting worse. Do you mean worse these past days and weeks or is the situation worsening every spring year over year?

@sharonk76, I'm wondering how you are doing? How is your breathing?

If someone at Mayo is skilled at skull based meniniomas, cranial csf leaks would add comments....please patients look up for yourselves.
top not hosp and drs have NO idea? ENT skull based surgeons (not in Rochester) nasal bleeding, debilitating brain leaks misdiagnosed and dismissed. so very sad.

I’m also glad to have found this group for I’ve been having some of same issues this last year. Sad that some of you have found no resolution still. Been coughing up the hardened phylum, can’t breathe out of left nostril, neck very sore and tender, tender spots and bumps on face, ear pain, TMJ, and nights are difficult cuz I can’t breathe. I feel whole face/neck is deteriorating. ENT did scope but no answer. Just been using the over counter stuff you all are using but no relief. Warmer and humid weather may help I’m hoping but winter is just around corner here in Minnesota.

Hi Zaa, welcome to the ENT group. Your discomfort with pain and breathing problems sound miserable. I'm tagging @jea1 @edeng @vita61 @beebuzz and @nrd1 to see if they have some experiences and thoughts to share with you.

In the meantime, you may also wish to see this related discussion on TMJ

Zaa, how do you manage your pain? It must be so hard to get a good night's sleep.

I, like others, had a bad orthodontist 45 years ago, that could have done some damage and have had lots of dental work too. Dentist found a tooth yesterday that has resorption so may loose it. I’m a clincher and have worn mouth guard for 20+ years. Started to see physical therapist so getting the exercises and have seen acupuncturist couple times to deal with sinus and tmj. I’m not seeing any comments on here about loss of hearing and tinnitus, which happened to me on my bad tmj side. Anyone? So much happening in my face and neck, I’m worried! The stress and depression has been very difficult to deal with and not knowing who to turn to.

No, mine isn’t in my nose. It’s in my throat and looks just like many have posted.
I’m sorry that many are going through it but I’m a way, it’s nice to know that I’m not alone..
I almost considered getting my adenoids removed but from what’s few have said, it won’t change..
I also have a deviated septum.. I was hoping correcting it will help but it sounds like it has made others worse..
Also, about 5 years ago, after I “coughed” one up, I started eating a tablespoon of honey for a few weeks and when I went to my first ent appointment, they only saw “a small white patch” and couldn’t give me answers. Then it came back the next year and has been getting bigger every year since. I’m probably going to try the honey..
Good luck with it guys, hopefully we can find answers finally!!
