Which form of magnesium for pvc's? Taurate? Glycinate?

Posted by cgg @cgg, Mar 26, 2023

I an active, "young" 73. Have had pvc's for a couple months. Heart monitor showed a little over 1000/day and almost as many pac's per day. Dr. Upped my beta-blocker a little, which hasnt helped, and is referring me to a cardiologist (waiting for them to call for appt). Normal EKG and echo essentially normal but GP wants cardiologist to talk to me to explain everything. Magnesium was low side of normal. Have been on a PPI for a year for GERD. I understand serum Mg isn't a great measure of your true Mg situation. Am thinking of taking Mg supplement and for those of you who have been helped by it, what form are you taking? Taurate? Glycinate? Can you recommend a brand? Am so tired of this feeling! I get anxiety on top of it when I start feeling like they'll never go away. I don't want to live like this the rest of my life. Thanks so much!

After having tried several different forms of magnesium, mag taurate worked best for me. You just have to find what works best for you. It's not a one size fits all disease. Good luck to you.

Mine is just magnesium. I also take CoQ10. What beta blocker do you take? I am on metoprolol because atenolol gave me PVC's very bad. Have appt for Thursday to discuss a loop recorder because I had tried to go back on atenolol to see if it would curb these internal vibrations but it didn't and I had PVC's bad. Since being back on the metoprolol, I've not had any PVC's for 2 days so I may call to really see if I need loop recorder. My cardiologist is the one that recommended the magnesium saying it's great for the heart. He also said everyone has PVC's, even he does, but that I am very aware of every one I have. I've had a heart cath and echocardiogram and all is normal. No blockage and healthy heartbeat. They said unless I am having other symptoms like short of breath, sweating, passing out, chest pain etc, that the PVC's are harmless. I have had a couple PAC's too and that's just that one occurs in the upper chamber of the heart and the other in the lower chamber.

Hello! I am an active 41 year old and I have been getting PVCs ever since I contracted Covid. They stay for the 6months I have the antibodies and then they go away afterwards. I have take Propranolol for over 10 years now for my b/p, but the PVCs are still there. Seems like each time I get Covid they get worse. Sometimes the beta blocker works and they go away. Currently on 120 mg of beta blocker. I just read about magnesium taurate and malate for pvcs. I just started them two days ago and nothing yet, but I have read it takes up to a week. My doctor stated that no doubt my pvcs are Covid related and I should never receive a Covid vaccine or booster due to the uncertainty of the vaccine and how my body is reacting to Covid. I am scheduled to see an Electrophysiologist. I too suffer from anxiety and it makes it worse. Mine normally hit me when I overexert myself. I would love to hear how your appointment went.

No not really. I have found a high potassium diet does help though. My cardiologist said potassium does help them. I just took my heart monitor off last week and have an electrocardiogram and stress test scheduled.

My husband's EP recommended Mag-Tab SR for PACS, and as far as we know, it has worked fine.

The citrate formula is most easily taken up by the body, but you must watch for overactive bowel. I have taken it, plus the bisglycinate and malate formulae. Taurate is supposedly best for the brain.

How has acupuncture worked for you? I been thinking about hypnosis. Have you tried that?

Hello @cgg I am basically you minus several years. 🙂

Maybe I can help you a bit. Also taking PPI, have GERD, took beta blockers, but also was given xani for many pvcs and pacs per day.

My experiences so far: beta blocker, xani do not help, but they put me into depression. The reason is if you have GERD, most likely you have hiatus hernia or other gastro problem that might irritate your otherwise healthy heart via direct pressure (hernia) or via vagus nerve (reflux acid). What helped me: sport that cause high BPM, over 150, walk etc. Not eating big portions. Not eating at all after 6 pm. Have loads of water. No soda, no tomato based or other acidy food. I take potassium and magnesium, q10, l-carnitine, B6 and C1000mg.

When I won't be able to keep pvc numbers down (1-200/day), I will have my hernia fixed, if still not better, will have ablation. Because pvcs are no joke, especially when they come in a row. Unfortunatelly gastro cardiac issues are no man's land, almost impossible to find a specialist, so if we cannot make the trigger that irritates the heart go away, the only option is to isolate the node(s) that fires pvcs/pacs.

Try to regenerate during calm periods and try to have proper sleep. 🙂

Hello @pierre79 and welcome to Mayo Connect. I appreciate you sharing your experiences with @cgg and the other members of this discussion group. It sounds like you have lots of experience with gastro issues as well as cardiac issues. I applaud you for being so proactive with regard to these issues. You have definitely come up with a plan that works well for you.

Have you been dealing with these issues for many years? How did you come about following the eating/exercise plan that you described in your post?
