What about cruising post transplant?
Hi everyone! I'm Sharon and I received my liver transplant on 11/14/18 in Jacksonville. (Thank God for Dr. Burns and the entire Transplant Team). I'm doing very well and 8 months post Tx am beginning to feel stronger and more energetic than my pre-Tx self. I've started to think about traveling again; travel has been a central passion of my life. Has anyone had experience with cruising? When I think about floating around in a container with thousands of others far from medical personnel familiar with transplants and all the dietary restrictions regarding buffets and proper degrees of cooking, I'm leery. Is cruising for post transplants possible or just a bad idea?

Reading your reply, I realized that I have gone into my "ultra orthodox mode" for more than just what a cruise would do. Crowded events, lots of strangers/people, all serve to make me too nervous, to be able to enjoy myself. I never have been a big party person, thank goodness! It is simply safer to stay home than risk the possibility of infection of any sort.

I can totally relate @gingerw 😊 Nothing is worth getting sick and jeopardizing our transplant gift! I am so happy that you jumped into this discussion!
Totally agree with this group. No way would I jeopardize going on a cruise. Yes, besides Covid which is still around and as I was told will be around for years, Personally I will pass. Wearing. our mask will help yet not 100%. People often just don't understand the apprehension post transplant patients may always have in their lives.
Land travel is another whole ballgame. There is more accessibility for medical care. I don't believe cruise ships are going to divert a trip to bring you to shore to be hospitalized if a person becomes ill for any reason unless they have smaller boats to take a sick person to shore.. Ship captins may be able to arrange transport for you via a smaller vessel so a sick person can be medically treated. Even there is a ship doctor on board they are what family physician? Internist? An air vac helicopter would cost thousands. Who has that kind of money? After having a transplant especially kidney, is it just worth the worry? Would you be able to reach a nephrologist or a decent size hospital who treats kidney transplant patients? . I understand it's tough on the person who has the transplant. Many of us do miss cruising , people who do not understand our fear don['t walk our walk. Trips will be safer if we take as much precaution and do our homework. I am at peace just knowing that there are kidney specialist in major cities can be a great relief. Remember also. we have medicare and our own pet insurance which most country do not accept. IF treated in other countries they take your amex card or accept a wire transfer for any medical situation or hospitalization you receive. There is travel insurance yet it is limited as well. Ask your insurance company and or social worker if they can assist you with a travel plans to keep you safe. ect ect. You are not alone. .. . Yes, thank goodness for face time and the internet..where drs can share your medical history so a patient can be treated accordingly. Most importantly always having medical id( I believe there are some where your. medical history can be downloaded on to your cell phone or iPad lap and even medical id bracelets. and or tap tops so doctors in another country can review your kidney status health, medication and past/present medical conditions you have, besides being a transplant patient. . Just investigate before you travel. Best of luck. PS. Air transport from Las Vegas to NYC is about $15,000 for a medical vac. Heaven knows what transport cost are from Europe? They take amex too and I don't believe it is covered by insurance.
Agree with @yani2023
Yes on the iphone ... Medical history & Medications taken on a daily basis can be listed and are all tied into the Emergency Tab.... I am using this feature & would recommend all KTR do that, this way confusion can be streamlined in case. of an event not near to the Transplant Dr.
Air Medvac. is my view is more expensive domestically speaking too: I guess it varies from Medvac. provider to provider.. in some cases (Tx to Ca) can be over 40K
Hi @yani2023 😊
Excellent information thank you for jumping in! Does your Mayo Connect address include 2023 because you received your kidney transplant this year?
You're welcomed, Sorry , Dying brain cells here, I don't understand your question. I had by KT on Dec 2022. I used 2023, because that's the date I signed in to the Mayo Clinic website.
I worked in geriatric for over 25 years another vip fact I suggested to elderly people who have any kind of medical condition is the following even if you are traveling staying in a hotels or as a guest at anyones home. Yes, it's personal information that I doubt the maid cares about. Privacy or safety. IT's up to you.
Have a person you trust write up a medical letter to be place in several places in your residence. where you sleep above bedframe on the wall,( if Ems transfers you on to the gerny they will see it. Precious time is not wasted so drs at hospital can treat you immediately without wasting time trying to figure out medical information about you.
Place a date on sheet of paper and provide as much information as possible that includes , medical conditions you have been treated with, past surgeries, blood type incase you need blood instantly upon arriving at a hospital, food and medication allergies. This sheet of paper with this information you have the choice to give to a next-door neighbors you trust, close relatives you trust and or caregiver who comes into to home.( PS. before any caregivers come to your. home PLEASE I beg put away your jewelry, money or valuables, check books, credit cards, ect ect. . One safe place in under your refrigerator , pop the panel and carefully place on side. No one will look there. ( I have another friend who places her vip information valuables inside a large container of powdered soap. What their would think of that. We get ingenious as we get older.
ON this sheet of paper also list a person who could take care of your pets- and remove food out our refrigerator. A little thing to consider yet vip. Who want to return to gross moldy food?). Determine if there is a delivery pharmacy to your. home if you are not able to walk or drive yourself.
Alternative also to help you post hospital Er or hospitalization is to ask dr if you can have hospital pharmacy fill out any new medication or refills). This saves lot of headaches, stress and worry. The sheet with medication information should be in neon colored paper?staples amazon, so no one misses it. Provide this information to a neighbor also if you trust them. The best place to place this medical information in case you cannot talk or cannot remember is the door or area where you know Ems or individual will not miss it. As I mentioned also can be placed on front door inside your apt or home inside your residence , on a refrigerator, in your car where it is visible. There are medical brackets which can download medical information with all your drs, meds and relative contact. A lifesaver. Good idea to have necklace that tells EMS this info is on Emergency medication bracket. Sorry A few have missed looking for info.
Hope this helps.
@yani2023 😊
You are an amazing wealth of knowledge and ideas! ?(Your work experience with geriatrics has definitely provided some excellent tips for staying healthy and safe!)
Thank you so much for sharing all these wonderfully valuable ideas. I had my kidney transplant almost three years ago in 2020 during the height of covid.
