Burning/irritation in throat/ chest after nebulizing and huffing

Posted by sallyb827 @sallyb827, May 28, 2023

For the past several day after I have nebulized with 7% solution, used the Aerobika and huff coughed, my throat and chest feel irritated with a slight burning feeling. My head aches also.
I feel fine when I get up. This morning I used half 3% and half 7% for nebbing. It is like my throat and lungs are totally dry. Nothing is coming up after the Aerobika and huff cough and still the slight burning and irritation.
Has anyone else experienced this and what did you do?
Thanks,
Sally

You could try a different huff technique as different ones suit different people and some are more gentle than others. And I know of someone who takes honey for her throat, can't remember if it was before or after though.

I didn’t know there was more than one huff technique. Should I just google different huff techniques.

Yes. I use a gentle "who" as a huff. The breath holding is important as well and so is the breathing first into the lower lungs, then getting the breath in to the mid lobes, and then the upper, so for me I use short breath in, hold, "who", medium breath in, hold, "who", and then long slow deep breath in (without raising shoulders), hold and
"who", although by then I've usually got one ready for a "huff" and then a productive cough. I actually say "who" or "huff". But if you Google you will find different techniques, and you just keep trying until you find one that works for you.

Thank you! I am frustrated because I am still relatively new at this and bring up very little sputum.

I feel for you! I have a constant red, irritated sore throat from nebulizing 7%. I started with 3% but had no results (this was almost 13 years ago). I stopped my breathing treatments for a long time because I was an almost non-productive cougher. But my NJH doctor was concerned about the sputum collecting in my lungs so I've been using 7% once a day for a couple of years. I tried twice a day and simply couldn't tolerate the sore throat and burning in my chest. Immediately upon finishing my breathing treatment I drink some G2 or water and have a small bite of something to eat. It seems to help some. If the irritation is really bad I suck on one of my prescription "lollipops" for 20 seconds (any longer than that is not recommended). My ENT prescribed them through a compounding lab. The med is Tetracaine HCL 0.5%. It numbs the back of my throat for a little while and calms things down. I hope it helps to know you're not alone in this. Until I found this website I felt like no one ever had the problems I have with this disease. There is so much comfort in sharing...so thanks, you've helped me today!

I am experiencing the same issues. Slight burn and tightness in the chest and slight sore throat. I’ve gone down to 3 % and will try being a little more gentle with cough and huff and breathing. I also think I need to drink more water!! Thank you all for the tips and encouragement

When I have irritation of my throat from nebbing or whatever I take 1/3 - 1/2 teaspoons of Manuka honey. It is a little pricey but does a good job. I've decided I'm worth it. Also try using half 3% and half 7% to give yourself a break. My pulmonary doc does not believe 7% is better than 3% and won't give me an Rx for it. I'm going to order 7% from some supplier without Rx as it does seem to do well for out condition as indicated from our MAC folks. Good luck.

Where are you getting 3%? I can't seem to find it from any of our pharmacies.

Thanks for the honey tip! I'll give it a try. My NJH doc says that 7% is more irritating (no kidding!) to the lungs and helps those of us who are non-productive coughers produce. I'll give the half and half a go and see if that helps. I just had to go to my GI doc because I thought I was having some sort of gastrointestinal issue...turns out it's a strained abdominal muscle from coughing so hard! Last year it was a burst blood vessel in my left eye. I really do try to bring stuff up but it just doesn't happen easily. I appreciate your suggestion.

I wrote the original post and found that drinking water before nebbing really helped. I was told that one needed to neb on a totally empty stomach including water. That does not work for me. I need water to bring up the little bit of stringy white stuff that I produce.
