Metoprolol
I only started taking Metoprolol Succinate in October 2021 after having Covid. They started me on 25 mg, but I was having several side effects. They lowered it to 12.5 once a day. I had gone to my GP and told them the problems and she suggested going with the immediate Metoprolol . Well. I did and had a bad reaction to it. Called heart doctor and they said to get off and started me on Diltiazem 30mg. They said this was the lowest dosage. But three hours after taking the dose I begin to feel flush and my HR starts to go up. I have found I have to put ice packs all over me to bring it down. This has been one week since the reaction and I have been to the ER twice and in the bed for a week. I can only get up to go to the bathroom and then my heart rate goes up and I feel extremely weak. They have done blood work and EKG and nothing shows up with my heart. I might add I don’t handle meds very well. I am a one Tylenol, ibuprofen…person.

Hi, maybe you Just need some more time to adjust this New medicine or maybe the dosis is wrong?
I am taking metoprolol myself, 25 mg once a day, ( cause of covid feb.2022, fast heartbeat and high pulse) and I want to change medicine aswell because og too many sideeffect from metoprolol. So I am going to see a heart spesialist in 2 weeks to discuss a change of medicine. I also tried to wean of metoprolol, to 12.5 mg some days and then stop, but I got a high pulse and b.p also raised.so i know the feeling and it is not a good feeling. What did they tell you at ER?
Thanks for your response. I was most recently taking 25 mg Metoprolol twice a day. Very hi-dose. On Wednesday this week my doctor changed it to 12.5 mg twice a day and added another BP med Amlodipine 5 mg once a day. I'm hoping it will reduce my woozy feeling.
Hello @dianearant and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. This reaction to the change in medicine has to be concerning. Did your GP ever discuss a weaning protocol from Metoprolol before starting the new medication?
They said I was on such a low dosage that it would be ok. I am finally starting to feel a little better. I am just really discouraged with my cardio after all of this.
I suspect the 25 mg dose of Metoprolol is causing me lots of weird side affects. Two of the worst are pulsitile tinnitus and depression. Need to get off.
Try taking Melatonin Quick Dissolve by Nature’s Bounty 10 mg 30 minutes prior to bed time. Follow instructions on bottle. It got rid of my dreams and nightmares the first night i took it. Read on medical sites the interactions between the two. Magnesium may also help too.
I take metoprolol tartrate 75 mg twice a day for afib. No side effects. Perhaps it's the succinate that is the problem.
I got back from ER Monday because of this. I have a history of PVC's anyway and started years ago on atenolol. An ER doctor, in same practice with my cardiologist, changed me to metoprolol. I have internal vibrations so bad and because metoprolol crosses the blood brain barrier and atenolol does not, I tried to go back to atenolol. 3 days on it and with as many days with severe palpitations, they were coming faster and really scared me, I called EMS. I can feel every one I have and was calling them spot on and the EMS tech told me one I called was not a PVC but a PAC...atrial contraction. The difference is one occurs in upper chambers of heart and the other the lower chambers of the heart. I have had a heart cath a year ago and told I had a healthy heart and heartbeat with no blockage. I do know that my mom and sister both have the same condition where our adrenaline pump doesn't cut off. I take xanax for anxiety and BP meds to keep heart rate down. Last night my internal vibrations were at a level 7. I could lay my hand on my side and actually feel it vibrating inside. I felt very jittery when I got up. I talked to nurse practitioner at cardiologists office yesterday and am going back on the metoprolol. I'm having the flutters and palpitations right now. He also said to keep watch and they may have me wear a monitor again to see what it picks up. I know everyone has PVC's, even my cardiologist has them, he said I'm just very aware of them. I do drink coffee but only in the mornings and a couple cups and I dilute it. I also had a script for tartrate called in by mistake. I think I'll talk to cardiologist more about this but I've been seeing him for 20 years.
I have tinnitus so bad at times it sounds like I'm in a field surrounded by powerlines because it's that pitchy squeal that powerlines make. Sometimes I can use that Debrox ear wax removal and flush them and it helps tremendously.
