Intermittent fecal/sulfur breath odor

Posted by pbleonar @pbleonar, Jun 8, 2017

After scouring the web, I'm certain I'm not the only person with this problem, and not the only person who's been told they were imagining it. Anyway, the issue is I have intermittent odors when I talk (yes, I've been to the dentist 10+ times-- all say my oral hygiene is on point and xrays and inspections showed nothing). The only time it's practically non-existent is when I eat an unhealthily low-carb diet. Like others online, I've had CT scans, Barium swallows, endosocopy/colonoscopy, screening for parasites (getting one more from an IDS before crossing that off my list). All showed up negative. I tested positive for SIBO, but after researching that for the past 3 years, I'm certain SIBO is more of a symptom than a primary causal problem. Furthermore, even when I treated SIBO with heavy antibiotics, it did absolutely nothing for my breath-- and yes I was cleared of SIBO after a couple rounds of work. yet, the moment I eat carbs, I still get a "did someone just s*it themselves?" comment.

I guess what I'm getting at is I'm tired of doctors just saying it's IBS and SIBO and then proceeding to do zero investigating afterwards. I want to get down to the root cause of this, but most doctors are either too apathetic or too incompetent to do anything. Are there any researchers who specialize in studying and diagnosing hard to find problems in the GI tract? Between the 3 GI docs, 2 ENTs, 2 NDs and 1 IDS, I just can't take normal doctors anymore. I want my life back and I want a specific root cause so I can work on progressing from there.

Further notes: Diarrhea actually cleared up when I ate junk food and I had zero bloating, albeit the odor remained.

Xifaxan and neomycin did nothing for the odor, nor did the elemental diet. I actually think the elemental diet made the smell as bad or
worse than before.

*******Nitazoxanide********** worked wonders for the month I was on it. Solid stools even with foods that normally cause my ibs to flare up.
It's exactly the reason I felt there was more going on to everything than just SIBO and IBS.

Oh my god this is literally my life, and people argue with me that I don't smell, they have no reason to lie and I tell them I must be mental because I can rationalize reasons why anyone would lie... How can I believe it when people react to me the way they do.? say the passive aggressive things they do?? This started 8 years ago and when I first researched it literally i found online that this was a mental illness and many who suffer from it commit suicide..

When my son was about 9 or 10, he had awful smelling breath. Smelled like something had pooped in his mouth. Finally got a diagnosis, his adenoids and tonsils were so big, traces of food would get trapped and rot in his throat. We got them removed and he never had that issue again.

Idk if that helps, but thought I would put it out there.
Hope you find your answers.

I'm with you brother, I've have something super similar. When I eat a full keto diet my symptoms subside. When eat carbs of pretty much any kind my symptoms flare up big time. Elevated heart rate, stomach discomfort, intermittent diarrhea/ constipation, brain fog, extreme irritability, what appears to be dandruff but is just the fungus on my scalp and beard, discoloration on toe nails, frequently injury when when training for no apparent reason. The list goes on. The gastroenterologist I seen told me that sibo isn't proven to make people sick, so complete waste of time there. Basically been fighting this battle completely alone. Recently it came back worse then ever. I feel like a hostage in my own body. I'm only 37 years old. With no end in sight. Beyond frustrated and been driven to tears multiple times. I'm sure I have candida as well as probably 1 or 2 other things.

Have you tried a functional medicine doctor? They look at the body as a whole….my experience has been very good with mine.

Are you doing anything holistically?

@msacctnt

Same here. I have done a list of things to solve this. Have you had any luck?
3 upper endo's
gall bladder removed
tonsils removed
stopped eating red meat
I take probiotics
floss after each meal
monthly detox
gargle with salt and peroxide after each meal
Nothing works!

Are you cured now?

I also have been dealing with this sulpher/fecal breath. I have had issues with NAFLD and am scheduled for GB removal soon. I am an RN with 3 auto immune diseases. Doctors are clueless and think you are dramatic. You have to self diagnose everything and keep bugging them for tests. I have massive bloating after I eat and I don't think GB issues causes that kind of back up of a smell. It's definitely more of a liver issue, but it's hard even getting in to see people..

And yes I too have been cleared by all the dentists/perodontist and GI specialist. Have been on a probiotic. Have not had parasite testing yet...

Guys I have this, and have had it since I was young I’m sure frequent antibiotic use caused this. I have been diagnosed with a hiatus hernia and Sibo. But I believe this all started with H pylori, my evidence for this is most hiatus hernias are also found along side H pylori(you can also look this up). A symptom of h plyori is low stomach acid. And guess what one of the consequences of low stomach acid is? SIBO! ( again you can look this up) I have tested negative for h pylori via stool tests many times but I’m convinced I have it as I have all the symptoms. I believe what we are suffering with is the result of a long term h pylori and Sibo infection and the smell is caused by a sluggish liver, low stomach acid and bacteria that produce hydrogen sulfide, dimethyl sulfide and other gases that we can’t break down.

Further evidence that I believe strengthens this theory is people find relief reducing sugar and carbs which bacteria feed on, taking antibiotics which kill bacteria. Taking probiotics which change the gut flora and also taking things that help with low stomach acid such as beta INE hcl and sometimes apple cider vinegar.

Let me know your guys experience with this and wether you can relate.
