Shingrix and peripheral neuropathy

4 days after my 2nd Shingrix vaccination, I suddenly developed intense peripheral neuropathy in both feet...for the first time in my life...anyone else?

At 66 years I thought I may need a shingles vaccine . Not long after I developed the first signs of short fiber neuropathy.
I am not diabetic alcoholic or a smoker . My diet is excellent I don’t have any vitamin deficiencies and all bloods are completely normal including heavy metals .. The markers all point to shingrix vaccine . There is nothing else to explain my current permanent debilitating condition .

After lots of blood work, MRI's and multiple doctors only finding low vitamin d and low testosterone, a neurologist said it was likely tied to the vaccine, when I ask if that was his diagnosis he laughed and asked if I was crazy, he wanted to keep his practice. My faith in the medical world has been destroyed. Big pharma controls everything, and I question if any doctors can do better than Web MD. I'm now living in in extreme pain or doped up to the point of forgetting my address. Disappointment doesn't describe what I feel.

I received my first vaccination three years ago. Even before it was time to get the second dose (which I didn't get), I was seeking help for my numb feet. After lots of blood work, MRI's and multiple doctors only finding low vitamin d and low testosterone, a neurologist said it was likely tied to the vaccine, when I ask if that was his diagnosis he laughed and asked if I was crazy, he wanted to keep his practice. My faith in the medical world has been destroyed. Big pharma controls everything, and I question if any doctors can do better than Web MD. I'm now living in in extreme pain or doped up to the point of forgetting my address. Disappointment doesn't describe what I feel.

Yes no one is going to admit a vaccine for anything is going to harm. In the end nothing can prove it. It is what it is. I do wish I had not worried about getting shingles though. I may have lived a better life than being stuck with PN

Well I guess we will never know about these Vaccines. And I’m thinking the company would never admit liability not that we after anything …but in the end the incidents are so low we are on our own even if it was the vaccine for shingles. All the best to maintain a good quality of life. I still can’t believe there is no cure. Amazingly disappointing.

There are actually attorneys that are starting to represent people who have had serious side effects from the Shingrix vaccine. No the company that makes Shingrix won’t admit it but it can be investigated and proven by so many of us.

Hello @steve970, Welcome to Connect. Sorry the vaccine caused the numbness in the feet. I also have neuropathy with numbness in the feet and can relate. You are right, disappointment wouldn't describe how I would feel either. There are actually attorneys that are starting to represent people who have had serious side effects from the Shingrix vaccine. No the company that makes Shingrix won’t admit it but it can be investigated and proven by so many of us.

Yes, so far as I know it is in the United States. It could be in other
countries.

I received the 2nd Shingrex dose on February 12, 2019. I am a 62 year old male and do not have diabetes. Two nights later in bed, I experienced intense itching on my legs, feet, arms and hands. A few nights later, I experienced intense "electrical tingling" throughout my body along with nausea and lower abdominal pain. I don't know how else to describe this awful sensation. By morning, it was gone. This quickly evolved into regular daily sensations of burning feet, itching, tingling, or pin pricks of pain in these same locations. I became so alarmed that I made an appt. at the Neurological Dept at the University of Michigan. They listened to my story, did some blood tests, and gave me an MRI of my neck. Their vague diagnosis was either cervical arthritis or inflammation brought on by exercising. They offered no explanation for the leg and foot symptoms. Their recommendation is to start taking Gabapentin and get something called cervical traction from a physical therapist. I did mention to them that I had recently gotten the 2nd Shingrix dose but at that time I had not yet realized that the symptoms started only two days later and they had no reaction in any case. (We only realized this fact last night when we looked at the date of the vaccination). The only side-effect I had from the first dose was an extremely sore arm. It has been just over three months now and my feet are burning as I write this. There are symptoms every day with some days better than others but this has taken the joy out of my life.I will be seeing my PCP in two days. My greatest fear is that this may never go away and i am really just p****d off about this. I realize that it is probably impossible to prove that my symptoms are due to Shingrix but the timing is certainly suspect. I wish I had never heard of Shingrix. - Jim in Michigan

The vaccine is known to cause Gilliam Barre syndrome/GBS (rare but it happens). It also is known to trigger other underlying conditions, including nerve disorders. This has been confirmed by my own doctor and my pharmacist. I had the first (of 2) doses a week ago and it triggered the worst case of sciatica ever. I am in so much pain, and I've been advised not to take the second dose (due in 2 months). I am also very afraid that this sciatica pain will radiate outward to the rest of my body which will then be diagnosed as GBS. I know 2 people who had the first shot and one now has sciatica, and the other is very sick. This is a terrible vaccine. It replaces a previous version that was very dangerous.

I am in Canada and in the worst pain of my life as the vaccine triggered sciatica (I suffer from an underlying nerve condition which can manifest as sciatica or other severe pain throughout my body). This vaccine should not be administered. The link has been made in my case between the vaccine and the sciatica, and I live in fear that it is radiating outward to become Gilliam Barre Syndrome

Hi, I just had my second Shingrix shot yesterday. My arm is terribly sore but so far no numbing and or nerve pain as with the first one. I mentioned to the Pharmacist where I got the first shot that my left hand (got the first and second one in left arm) in particular, the fingers felt like they were numbing. The Pharmacist told me yesterday that whoever administered the first dose may have nicked a nerve when administering the first shot. She was concerned to hear this and I assured her that it did pass in several days and I had no other after effects since that first week. She did mention that a lot of people have more side effects with this shot and that the first shot is a slightly different blend than the second one. Shingrix is a strong shot, both first and second....I believe she said it was a "live virus" as opposed to the original Shingles Shot which was not a live virus.. I hope that your symptoms/side effects pass which I believe they will. If they don't clear up, get in touch with the person who administered it and you can also call the manufacturer of the vaccination and mention this to them. Good luck....By the way, I still feel better having gotten both the shots and now I am done with it and should not have to worry about Shingles and it was worth the side effects.

The original Shingles vaccine consisted of a live virus. The Shingrix vaccine does not, which makes it presumably safer than the previous vaccine. However, Shingrix can cause all kinds of problems with underlying conditions that you may not even remember or know about (like peripheral neuropathy) and it can cause GBS (rare but it does happen). This vaccine has caused me a lot of nerve pain that is very scary to deal with - and I rue the day I trusted the health profession to administer it to me to prevent shingles when in fact what I deal with now as a result of the vaccine is (in my opinion) worse than getting shingles because I have no idea if it will ever end.
