Forteo: What is your Experience?

Posted by leeosteo @leeosteo, May 18, 2023

I'm looking for anyone's experience with Forteo. What were your side effects? Were they tolerable? Did you see good gain in bone density? What med did you follow up with to lock in gains?

I got tinnitus during my fifth week on Forteo. I wasn’t on it long enough to see any gains. My doctor took me off of it. I suffer most days with the tinnitus. Now instead of dealing with my osteoporosis, I spend my days trying to deal with the tinnitus. It has ruined my life.

I did four months of Forteo with no side effects. I had some improvement in bone density just with those four months. Now, I’m on Tymlos. No side effects. In a few days I am going on Evenity. I’m hoping that will be easy peassy, too.

I just tested a device for use with a generic FORTEO. I don’t know when it will be out but it will be cheaper by far. The test takes 15 or 20 minutes, is easy and pays $200 in cash.

sue6, I'm sorry to hear about your experience with Forteo. Did you switch to another osteo med?

Susanfalcon52, good to hear you've had good experience with Forteo and Tymlos. I hear they're similiar. Why only a few months on Forteo? Why on Tymlos and going on Evenity shortly?

mspatart, is the device the same pen like device used today with Forteo name brand (injection into abdomen or thigh)? Do you have to be using Forteo (generic or brand) to be eligible to test the device? How did you get hooked up to the study?

Device is very similar and I had no problem using it at all. They asked me to send FORTEO package image with my prescription. If you are using something similar I think you could contact them to inquire if you qualify. They are very helpful.

I too am curious why you stopped Forteo after 4 months ? Then seemed like only on Tymlos a short time , though maybe that was my interpretation. And now switching to Evenity?? Would like to understand that?? Good luck though as it seems you’re not having issues or concerns.

I couldn’t afford the Forteo and my doctor was getting it from a drug rep for me. I used that and she was trying to get more. Warning - this is a terrible story - my doctor fell and broke her neck. She was stabilized and in rehab. I had had a dexa right before that and she called from rehab to tell me that I had significant improvement with just the 4 months of Forteo. A few days later, she died. Her nurse called me to tell me this and also said that they had four months of Tymlos in the frig and that Dr. L would want me to have it.
So, that’s why the short course of both drugs.
I went to see my rheumatologist because I needed someone to follow my bone health. He looked like he was going to cry because Dr. L was beloved in our community. He told me that he would put me on Evenity when I finish the Tymlos. I take my last dose of Tymlos today and my first dose of Evenity day after tomorrow.
So, the short courses of Forteo and Tymlos wasn’t about tolerance. It was about cost.
