I'm so sick and I'm scared I'm gonna die

Posted by claire987 @claire987, May 20, 2023

Hello, I am a 14 year old girl. I had canker sores for about a week, these are usually a prequel to sickness for me. Then I woke up on Monday with a slightly sore throat. On tuesday I woke up with a low fever, muscle aches and that same sore throat but still went to school. Wednesday is when it got really bad, I woke up to get ready for school and my mom took my temperature, I didn't have a fever. So I started to get ready for school. But I noticed that whenever I stood up I felt nauseous. I eventually rushed to the bathroom where I threw up and dry heaved the small amount of food that was in my stomach. My mom agreed that I shouldn't go to school, and she took my temperature one more time before she went to work. It had risen to 101.8. Once she left, I took a long bath hoping it would help me feel better. As soon as I got out of the bath, I threw up again. Then I took a three hour nap, and my fever rose to 103 by the time my mom got home. For the first time all day, she made me eat some saltines, at 1:30pm. Then she gave me some ibouprofen and my fever went down a bit. Throughout the rest of the day I ate less than a full can of chicken noodle soup and some popcicles. I slept well but when I woke up on Thursday I threw up again, and immediately took ibouprofen for my fever. My dad took me to the doctor because they thought I had strep. (My throat was extremely sore and swollen). The doctor told me I didn't have strep. He said it was a virus and would go away soon. Thursday I ate a banana, a chicken salad sandwich, doritos, chick fil a, a milky way, and some popcicles. Friday morning I woke up after sleeping terribly with a white film on the roof of my mouth. When I went to look at it in the mirror, I noticed some white spots on my tonsils. (Which I promptly googled about and had a panic attack) My mom said she would call the doctor and I waited all morning to get a straight answer. They said, "it's just a virus, it'll go away soon. Let us know if the symptoms get worse or if the ibouprofen and tylenol stop working." That morning I ate a smoothie, and my dad made me some eggs for lunch, for dinner I had a casa dia and some popcicles. Around 3pm my fever went to 102 even though I was on ibouprofen and tylenol. My mom called the doctor again and they said to come in tomorrow. I tried to go to sleep Friday night with horrible pains in my stomach like I was going to diarrhea, but couldn't. I only slept for a couple hours before waking up at 1am (Literally praying that it was morning). So that's where I am now, sitting up at 2am writing this. I don't know what to do, I'm so tired but the thought of sleeping is horrible. I'm in so much, constant pain and all the doctors have given me is a strep test and a "It's just a virus, sorry we can't help you" I don't know what to do and I feel so alone and scared. Please help me, someone

@claire987 This must so awful for you. How long have you had these symptoms? We are not medical professionals on Mayo Clinic Connect and so we cannot diagnose. We do provide support.

I’ve had illnesses that required persistence on my part with the doctors. For me it took awhile for other symptoms to develop and not go away before other tests were ordered. You certainly have a lot of symptoms and with the fever I can tell how miserable you must feel.

I suggest that you talk with your mom and if your symptoms are still present this weekend then go back to the doctor again.

Will you do that? And then come back here and let me know what you find out?

Hello @claire987

I am so sorry to hear that you are not feeling well. It really can be worrisome when you don't feel well, and you can't find a reason nor a treatment.

Did your doctor offer you or your parents any suggestions beside taking ibuprofen? I would like to invite @astaingegerdm to this conversation to see if she might be able to offer some ideas that might help you.

If you are worse this weekend you should go to a youth care clinic or if you have no youth care clinic then a regular health care clinic or emergency room at hospital. It varies from where you live.

Did they test you for things other than strep (covid or flu) .. or take a blood sample?

I hope you feel better soon.

I’m sure you must be scared now after a whole week being sick with fever and no diagnosis.
You definitely need another evaluation today.
It’s possible that it’s a virus but you still need some proof of that, such as a blood test.
You said a strep test was negative?
Did they test you for Covid and Flu? They say nowadays that stomach symptoms could be the first to show with Covid.
I definitely would want to know if you have Mono. It happens often in your age group plus symptoms can mimic strep. There would be the same sore, red throat - sometimes with white patches. Also there would be swollen neck glands and a tender stomach.
It could be confirmed with lab tests- Mono spot or EBV (Epstein Barr Virus) titers.
I also think you need a blood test in general at this point.
Do you have an Urgent Care office near you?
If not, you probably have to go to the ER.
Be careful taking Ibuprofen on an empty stomach- it could cause irritation and nausea.
Show these conversations to your Mom- she has to speak for you and be persistent until you know what is making you sick.
Please get back to us this weekend if you can!
Big hug!

Hello everyone. Thanks for all getting back to me so fast. I'm sorry to drop all this on ya'll but my family doesn't take most of my concerns seriously. I only got 5 hours of sleep last night because my stomach hurt and I was scared to wake up as miserable as the day before. But when I woke up, even though all the medicine was out of my system, I didn't have a fever! My mom took me to the doctor and he tested me again for strep and tested me for mono. Both of which I tested negative. The doctor said that I probably have tonsilitis, and it will go away soon. When I got home, my fever came back to 101.4 and my tonsils started bleeding. So yeah, I guess I just have to wait it out.

I’m sorry your parents don’t take you seriously.
A diagnosis of tonsillitis just means that in general your tonsils are inflamed/ infected- no specific cause.
Fever varies through the day- often low in the morning and rising during the day.
How is your stomach now?
Keep a log on symptoms throughout the day.
You have been sick for a while now. If you aren’t able to go to school Monday you should at least have blood tests done.

Tonsils need to be removed . For many young people they cause more harm then good .. you sound bright , I feel you can reach out here to individuals that will lead you in a good direction .. and NO you are not gonna Die .. a Fever will always make us have this feeling of death . Yet with Tylenol and cold packs to help the lymph’s , this will pass ….. reach out to other family … aunt . Grandma etc ..
