3 weeks post liver transplant: when will I feel better?

Posted by msfins @msfins, May 15, 2022

I had a liver transplant 3 weeks ago because of an autoimmune disease. I don't feel like myself right now. My face is all puffy and swollen which I assume is from the high doses of steroids. I've always been a thinner person but now I feel so fat and that is weighing on me mentally. My legs are still swollen. If I keep them down for even a short time, they become heavy and make it hard to walk. Everyone keeps telling me to be patient but right now nothing feels like it'll get better. I guess I just stupidly assumed things would bounce right back and that frustrates me. Im so miserable and even becoming more depressed. I tell people that and they make you feel guilty for feeling depressed. I guess I'm just looking to talk to people who actually been thru a similar experience. I would like to know how things went for you. Did you have bad side effects to the medicines? Did you ever get depressed after? Do things actually ever go back to normal again? As far as swelling and water retention. When they lowered your steroids did you lose weight and puffy ness in ur face?

@patrickski98, Welcome to Connect and Congratulations on your recent liver transplant! I transplanted in 2009, and I remember being able to be at son's wedding 5 months after my transplant. I was skin and bones, and still weak and needed lots of rest. But I was so very happy have received my gift of life and able to be at that event.

How are you getting along with your recovery? Do you have any questions about resuming life with your new organ?

I’m glad that you are doing well five years out. I think the only question right now is did you suffer with itching and, if so, how did you treat it? Thank you.

Hi there,
I am 5 months post liver transplant. It took me a solid month to lose the puffy weight. It was horrible. But it did resolve eventually. I was in surgery 12 hours, which affected my kidneys, and high levels of Cellcept & Prograf. Now things are better. My doses are lower but I struggle with appetite. Orgain protein shakes are a life saver. I suffered from mental illness before surgery & did feel a little sad, after all life has changed. That too has resolved. Be patient it gets better!

Hi
Sad?
You are right on top of the world. Ask a person who went through the same process 4 years go.
Just take one day at a time. You will be just fine.
Just stick to your post liver transplant medics, diet, and workout will take you to the promissed land.
I am glad it worked out well for you.

Take care

I am nine months post liver transplant. Like you, the first several weeks were shocking and depressing to me. The first time I looked at myself in the mirror ET was looking back. I started feeling much better about six weeks out. (Your mileage may vary😉). After three months I was back in the gym doing very light weights (3-5 lbs). A guess, based only on my personal experience, is to expect to feel better, but not quite your self after 6-8 weeks and to feel markedly better in three months. I know that sounds like a long time but as my coordinator reminded me: “dude, we gutted you like a fish!” Best of luck to you and hang in there. I always try to take the time to remind myself that while I’m complaining, others on the waiting list have died. We are two of the lucky ones. Also, I prayed daily. I don’t know your faith (if any) but if you are a spiritual person I highly recommend prayer over anything.

My itching was horrible!!! I will be one year post next month. It took months and four hospital visits to get my itchiness under control. I’m on gabopentin, hydroxzine, and several other meds for the itching. I use numerous creams as well. Let me know if you want any additional info.
