Me!!!! 2016 I had reconstructive hip surgery fixing labrum tears and more. This surgery made everything worse! August 15 2018 I had a full left hip replacement. At four months it seamed it was a success, around 6 months I started having extreme leg it has gone from bad to horrific! I went back to Surgeon had x-rays and bloodwork done and I was told everything looks good. I have Dealt with chronic pain since I was 19 I just turned 39 and I cannot understand how it can feel like someone is stabbing a knife in my leg but everything is fine they say???

I Attached a picture of the x-ray from my eight week review!

I would be just about healed if not for this lingering swelling under the incision. Like a water balloon. I have my balance and strength already and can easily stroll around the house without any assistance. Sitting in a non cushy chair or car seat is difficult after a few minutes as the incision is still very uncomfortable. Very frustrating as it doesn’t seem to disappearing any time soon. I saw my surgeon for this on 5/7 and he was not concerned. Said it was a slowly absorbing hematoma.. I see my surgeon again on 5/16 at the 4 week mark... anyone else struggle with lingering swelling?

Hi @lucas1954 and welcome to Connect. You may have noticed I moved your post to this discussion on pain after hip replacement so that you can connect with others who have similar experiences. That swelling sounds awful and frustrating.

I wanted to introduce you to @debbraw @lindyloo8 @katrine and @teemarie as they may be able to support you through this.

Back to you @lucas1954 did your surgeon give you any more information on what that means and how to treat it if it continues to swell?

Thanks Ethan.. Compression wrap or shorts were recommended to speed up the absorption of the hematoma. I failed to ask how long this should take. He was supremely confident this would resolve itself eventually. If this swelling is still bothersome come my 4 week visit to the surgeon this Thursday, I will push for a better answer.

Hi @lucas1954 - I want to add my welcome to Ethan's. Glad you are on connect. I have had two TKRs but not a hip replacement. Thankfully, I didn't have problems with too much swelling. I'm wondering- have you checked with your physical therapist about his or her ideas on how to reduce the swelling? In my experience, those folks are a gold mine of information! Best of luck. Please keep us posted.

Hi Debra.. for Hips, they don’t assign any PT other than a set of exercises done at home on your own.

Wow @lucas1954 - this just proves that you learn something new every day. I did not know that there was not PT after hip replacement. Does icing it help? Best of luck.

@debbraw @lucas1954 I think whether or not you have PT after a hip replacement is pretty much dependent on the surgeon's preferences. I know that my brother-in-law did have PT after his THR last year.

I have had the same thing and so have many others. Same exact process bloodwork scans xrays even a hip aspiration nothing. All good. To compound the problem in trying to seek for an answer the clinic I was going to really had staff problems and I unfortunately have worked in this field my whole working life starting in nursing.. the care was very concerning for my own urgency and bone health I decided not to go back. I have sought out another physician that has a great deal of knowledge about the prosthesis. I fear I may have to have a revision. They make one with more stem end flexibility. Sometimes the prosthesis is not a good fit and you get 'end of stem pain in the thigh. I had to look all of this up myself. The other poss problem is that because the prosthesis will absorb the impact of walking etc. Your own bones do not continue to regenerate they call it 'stress shielding'. At any rate I have an appt next week let you know how I feel after that. My thigh pain comes and goes. Today I can walk. Tomorrow? Who knows. Walking sitting standing weight bearing on that leg will put me back in bed.the only comfortable place. Even sitting in the recliner or on the couch for 15 min will illicit pain when I get up. I worked really hard after being sick not just w my hip to get healthy and active again. I have lost weight new meal plan on keto anti inflammatory diet. But now I cant work out I have tried after pt in off and home. So bummed...have hope I will check back after next wk. My surgery was July 2017. I have always experienced this pain intermittently and told my doc. I also have severe groin pain when it kicks up....I am in tears sometimes when it cramps up. Hang in there folks. Pain is not normal and we arent all crazy. There has to be an answer and a solution.

Has ANYONE figured out what is causing their sharp thigh pain post hip replacement? I had a trhr a year ago due to my femor head collapsing from AVN. The pain prior was everywhere. In my groin / hip joint / down my whole leg. Now I'm not sure if this pain has been going on since before or after the replacement but it seems like after. It is soooo sharp and severe it about doubles me over. It sometimes in my groin area and sometime in the middle of the front of my thigh. Sometimes I'll even feel it off to the side of my thigh. It's very random. Sometimes it will last for weeks and sometimes days and sometimes it will hit me a few times a day. I have even felt it going from a sitting down and leaning forward to sitting up. I have had x rays, and mri's and the doctors can't figure it out.
