Fatigue every afternoon - How can I get more energy?

Posted by jmorris58 @jmorris58, Dec 18, 2022

I am 75 and am very tired every afternoon. I need a two hour nap. My blood work is good. Any comments that can help me get more energy?

I am 74 and I am low energy in the afternoon also and I was never this tired 👍. The low energy hits me between 1 pm and 2pm. I don’t like it I am an active person.

There’s a difference between just feeling a little tired or having low energy and fatigue (which you did not mention). I agree with Funcountess-if you just have low energy, enjoy a little snooze. If you ever feel that it’s difficult to push through your daily life and are fatigued, consult with your doctor.

Also, sometimes we just need water for a pick me up.

Best wishes, Cindy

I was so surprised to find out that I had low B12! Taking adequate doses has made a big difference.

The other thing is that I wasn’t able to sleep well. Check out if you need a sleep study. It wasn’t my problem, but it might be yours.

Lastly, I was haunted by what felt like a black dog of fatigue clamped onto the back of my skull. It was with me all day, like a fog. I finally switched my blood pressure meds to clonidine at night, and now I sleep like a baby and have so much energy that I am an annoying.

I'm a 71 yr. old woman and find that pretty much after 2 pm I'm done with anything that requires a lot of energy or strength. Yesterday, at the botanic gardens we walked around and left at 2pm both my husband and myself just felt we had enough. I'm not happy with it but it's just the way it is for us. So I have to plan to do big jobs in the morning and taper off as the day goes by. Leaving going out to eat, visiting with friends, paper work, light shopping etc for later in the day. So far it's worked for me ...good luck !

Testosterone check. I am 66 and mine was like 150 after prostate cancer treatment. I take a shot every two weeks and feel much better.

Boy, I can relate. I take an hour nap and then go for a walk. Fatigue is one of my biggest issues. Like you, I have always been active and high energy and don’t like this one bit!

After an afternoon nap, take a walk for around 30 minutes to activate the body. The walk can be done inside the house. One can have interruptions during the walk, if tired.

Of late, I found that for me (Aged 83), some sort of activity such as doing some household work also was useful, E,G I make my own tea after the nap.

Do you snore? Do you sleep with your mouth open? If yes, you might have sleep apnea. Ask your doctor for a sleep test.

Hello @patient101

Many of us have had sleep disturbances while taking Metoprolol. On Connect, there is a discussion on the side effects of this med. Here is the link,
--Side Effects of Metoprolol
https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/metoprolol/
As you read the posts you will find many others mentioning sleep problems. After several weeks of sleeplessness, I contacted my cardiologist through the patient portal, and he prescribed an alternative med that worked for my heart rhythm problem but did not cause the sleep problems.

How long have you been taking metoprolol? Have you contacted your cardiologist through the patient portal or by phone to see if there is an alternative med you can take or perhaps, if taking the med at a different time of day would help?

After discussing with my cardiologist, my GP, and my psychiatrist, I have settled on clonipine, and it has solved ALL my problems. No vivid dreams, no hangover, and sweet, sweet sleep.

I think a midday nap helps keep us going, not overtired in the evening. Make sure you are eating enough protein, and get enough hydration. I just accept it and change my list of things to do. If you need justification, there is a concept of "spoonies," who have a finite amount of energy. https://butyoudontlooksick.com/articles/written-by-christine/the-spoon-theory/

I have bookmarked the article. Very insightful. My husband has Parkinson’s and I’m sure this is how he feels. I went through nine months of treatment for triple negative breast cancer and I know that’s how I felt during that time. Thank you for sharing.
