Reclast Infusions: Side-effects & Recovery time
I just had a reclast infusion last week and have had serious side effects. I had the worst flue like aching for 5 days then my lefty arm became full of inflammation in the wrist, elbow and shoulder which caused extreme pain and I lost the ability to straighten my elbow. Ultrasound showed huge amounts of fluid throughout the arm. The right arm is now starting to have the same symptoms. The pain is excruciating. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Neither the ER doctor nor the Dr. who prescribed the procedure knew what to do to ease the symptoms. Both arms from fingertips to shoulder are swollen and neither elbow will straighten. Anyone else have adverse reactions to the reclast infusion? If yes, how long did it last?

You could take Reclast or Prolia. Amgen makes both Evenity and Prolia and their website says to follow Evenity with Prolia.
My doc won't prescribe Prolia because when you stop, there is a rebound and increased risk of fracture- unless you go on Reclast or another bisphosphonate.
My doc told me Reclast stays in your system for a long time so it can "lock in" gains and I might be able to take a med break. Prolia doesn't last as long- which can be good (if your body doesn't like the med) or less good (if you stop)>
Yes , You are right my Dr said There will be no stopping . I am seeing an endocrinologist . He said once I start Evinity
. My next step will
Be Prolia. No stopping is what he told me . My bones will rapidly go backwards . He never mentioned anything about any other med .
You cannot take Prolia forever....Your doc is absolutely right that we cannot stop bone-building drugs without taking something to "lock in" gains. Our docs just differ on which drug to take to lock the gains in!
That’s very borderline kidney function for Reclast. I think 35 eGFR is the cut off. I have mid-60s-70s and was concerned but after my 1 Reclast infusion, it hasn’t seemed to affect it so far.
I would be cautious…
I think Prolia is preferable for those with moderate to severe renal disease.
There’s evidence that reduced/half dose works as well or better than the full dose- if I have again I will do that and also 18 -24 months apart.
Let us know what you decide to do! Good luck 🍀.
Thank you
Thanks so much @leslie2121. I am not sure why my endo is not concerned. He did order a retest which wasn't much better. Maybe because he is planning a "test dose" of 1mg versus full dose 5mg anyway, due to my demonstrated sensitivities to just about everything 🙂
I am driving to W. Mass. to see Dr. McCormick tomorrow and just (kind of) read his new almost 700 page book. I have also made an appointment with a nephrologist and with a second, highly rated endocrinologist.
I am going to do the most I can in the next 7 weeks to figure this out. I have two pens left of Tymlos because I did a partial dose this whole time (with excellent gains).
My current doc won't do Prolia. That would mean Reclast anyway at some point, and presumably my kidneys would be worse. (I am also exploring Evenity but same issue with follow-up). Oral bsiphosphonates would aggravate GERD but I am looking into those too.
Please let us know how your appointment with Dr. M went. I was thinking of doing a phone consult (ironically when I lived in Belchertown MA I had never heard of him. Now I am 800 miles away). I am now plowing thru his new book.
Good luck!
Anyone finishing Prolia and doing Reclast to prevent rebound needs to read that section of his book. Timing and testing CTX are very important.
BTW my x-ray said osteopenia! First time since 2001!!
I completed one year of Reclast in March. I am also hoping I do not have to take anymore Reclast.
Please let me know how you are doing and if the one year of Reclast is enough for you !
Thank you
I ended up in the ER within 8 hours of the worst pain in my life in the Tspine and stomach. This was two years ago and I have pain now all the time
