I am 6 weeks post op for bilateral hip replacement. I was doing great up until about two weeks ago. I was able to walk without a cane or anything else. All of a sudden I am having excruciating pain in my left thigh. It feels muscular, but I've been reading that it could be the implant is loose. Nothing seems to help with the pain (Tylenol arthritis, tramadol, meloxicam) and I have to use a cane. My leg feels like it's going to give out at any minute. I don't really have pain when I'm sitting, just walking. Has anyone else had this happen?

Hi there! My doctor has ordered a CT scan for this afternoon to rule out a fracture where the implant is. He's also sending me for PT (which I did not have after surgery) for 4 weeks and wants me to go back to using my walker for two weeks to balance out the weight. Because I'm favoring my left leg, my hip on the right side is hurting and we don't want to risk anything happening to that. I should know the results of the CT scan tomorrow.

Those all sound like reasonable next steps. You must be relieved, a bit at least, that there are things you can do to help and to prevent further harm. Thanks for the update.

Hi, I am sorry that you are having trouble with thigh, I wrote the original post. Its been 14 weeks since surgery and still having problems in both thighs. Have had back epiturals, am on gabapentin and will have nerve block on Tuesday. I also go to pt. After my own research, they agree it is meraglia parastestica. Have having a lot of trouble finding someone well versed in this area. My pt recommended I got into nyc and see a neurosuegeon. Am also going to try acupuncture. Its been a very tough situation with no end in sight. Surgeon takes no ownership. I hope and pray yours get better quickly. I am sure my situation is one in a million, at least I hope it is. DO not mean to frighten you just am venting, If you find any information out, please share...... Best of luck

After reading all the posts on this topic i am very disheartened. I have been dealing with persistent and intermittent sharp thigh pain in my left leg since about 8 weeks after bilateral hip replacement 5 months ago. It has gotten progressively worse till I now can not put any weight on my left leg at all. My right side is having the same pain now but not as bad probably because i have been bearing all my weight on that leg. i have had 3 add'l sets of x rays, none of which showed any bone fractures. I just had an MRI which shows bone inflamation - no fractures and no sign of loose implants. My surgeon recommended using crutches to keep no more than about 40% of body weight on that leg, also prescribed meloxicam 2x's a day for a coupe weeks which seems to help me put very light amount of weight on my leg while using crutches. Of course the crutches present other problems as one can not function normally long term with them. He says it is critical to continue putting some weight on the leg to stimulate bone growth. I will follow his recommendations till i see him a month from now and keep you posted as to whether this course of action helps.

Hello @nancefinn, Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Sorry to hear that you are having pain. That has to be really tough to endure the pain and I hope it will get better with time for you. Do you have time during the day when the pain is less noticeable? like in the morning when you wake?

Where did you have the surgery? I'm actually looking at having this procedure in several months.

Yes I have the sharp pain in my left thigh that you are talking about. I too wished I knew what it was. It is unclear. I am coming up to 1 year on my left hip replacement in July. I just had my right hip replaced in May 2018. My left hip pain started right away. I just thought it was normal but I know it is not because my right hip has no pain what's so ever. The pain I feel is a jolt or a shock in my left thigh daily. If anyone knows what it is please tell me, because I want to know what I can do on my end to fix it. It is so annoying. I had both of my hips replaced at Mayo in Rochester,MN. I have Dr Robert Trousdale as my surgeon. He had done previous surgeries on my hips called PAO'S- Peri aceatabular Osteotomy. Not sure if that is the right spelling. In my eyes he is the best. I hope someone can give me some answers. Thanks

I had RT Hip replacement (cemented), Dec 2017 and have had severe groin and thigh pain with a lump in my thigh since the beginning,,Touching the outside of my leg in some spots is very tender to touch. Surgeon is either not believing me or is trying to shove it under the rug. I had a bone scan done (which had nothing to do with the problems I was having, my PIP ordered it way before my surgery), and it showed "POST SURGICAL CHANGES AND LOOSENING" .The surgeon refused to look at the Scan CD, because he did NOT order it. When I questioned him about it,, he said it is "normal" to show "loosening" up to 2 years after Surgery. I have no way of finding out if this is a fact or not. He did finally do an MRI and said there is nothing wrong,, the report I have said," Insertional tendinosis and ossification of the gluteus minimus and medius tendons with mild insertional partial tearing, and same of the hamstring. So at this point I am not sure what to do,, other than live with the pain, Getting another Dr to look at me is almost impossible. I sure hope every that has this gets some relief.. thanks ,,

@frister Welcome to connect I'm sorry you are having so much pain from the surgery you thought would fix everything . After fractured back Dr gave me this option but I declined as I was worried about that putting cement in would so I declined. Hopefully others will chime in as to your pain.
