How long ago did you have the hip replacement? Have you talked to the surgeon about the thigh pain?

I had both done. The one im having issue with was 3 yrs ago, the pain stated a year later during winter. I have been back countless time and had so many test done with no conclusive answers..to say im fustrated is an understatement. The pain is so sharp i scream out. Wondering if the mayo could fiqure this out because my ortho just keeps racking up the bills with no answers

To be in such pain with no answers must be incredibly frustrating, not to mention eroding to your quality of life.

Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., is ranked among the Best Hospitals for orthopedics and for rehabilitation by U.S. News & World Report. You can read more about hip replacement surgery at Mayo here http://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/hip-replacement-surgery/care-at-mayo-clinic/why-choose-mayo-clinic/prc-20019151 and request an appointment.

I hope they can help.

Hi I have just had both hips replaced. First was July 19, 2015 right side. The second was January 21, 2016. Directly after surgery to my left hip in January while I was still in the hospital I had very severe shooting pains on my right thigh. It was also a burning sensation and numbness. It went from my belt line down to my knee. There were times it was so painful the shooting pain it was almost unbearable. This lasted for at least 2 weeks. I tried a TENS machine but did not help. Then I went to family doctor and he diagnosed Meralgia Paresthetica. He gave me prescription called Teva - Pregabalin. He said this was a medication for Shingles. Anyway I also spoke with my surgeon and he never heard of a situation as to mine. Where the right side was affected by the left side surgery. Anyway the medication has dulled it slightly and have been taking it for close to 1.5 months It is still quite bothersome and painful at times. Just wondering if anybody has had this and if can suggest any help. Also had one session of acupuncture. Did nothing. Would really appreciate any help on this. Thanks Lots. Cheers. Dave

Hi @paddledavid, welcome to Connect.
I moved your message to this thread started a little while ago by @Cjropes who was also experiencing sharp thigh pain after hip replacement surgery. I'm also tagging members @marysapp @marikat @stumpy @learningtolive2 who have had hip replacement surgery so that they can join the discussion.

FYI, here's some info about Meralgia Paresthetica that Dave mentions http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/meralgia-paresthetica/basics/definition/con-20030852

Dave, Is taking medication the long-term plan? What other options did your doctor suggest? I really hope @Cjropes got some answers to share here.

I didn't have hip replacement surgery, i fractured my hip due to a fall

@faith123 Thanks for clarifying that. When you discussed hip revision surgery I thought that you might have had a hip replacement. Teresa

Thanks teresa. Doesn't seem to be many on here that have had surgery for fractured hip

I fractured my hip seven or eight years ago. They put 3 pins it. A couple of years ago the pins started to push out so they removed them. I had no problems other than needing the pins removed..
