Bronchiectasis and diet

Posted by ckscoville @ckscoville, Jul 26, 2020

I’ve heard and read conflicting views and recommendations regarding the best diet for those of us with Bronchiectasis, esp. regarding dairy products and whether they contribute to mucus production. What have you found out regarding diet and foods that trigger problems?

Thanks for the references; I’ll check them out

Would you share your recipe for kimchi and let us know how you manage to eat 2-3 ounces a day? Thanks!

I also try to drink kombucha every day, kefir when I can and I keep a good supply of probiotics capsules to take every day. I’ve basically given up dairy, gluten, sugar and alcohol except for the odd glass of red wine. I was never much of a meat eater so that’s been easy. My beverages of choice have become filtered water with apple cider vinegar and/or tea made from fresh lemon juice and ginger root.

Since this is a thread on diet, I won’t even start on other ways I’ve changed my life since I decided to try to take control of my “recovery”. Thanks again to everyone on this forum for all the helpful information that has enabled me to do this.

Kathy, I’m unable to post on the Mayo forum from my PC and I’m loath to undertake the task on my iPhone since I’m a single finger typist on that device. However, if you are comfortable sending me your email address I can get it to you that way. If you’re uneasy with that I understand.

Hi! My bronchiectasis digressed drastically when I picked up two bacteria recently. It has been a wake up call. I feel like I’ll never get better, but have to be helpful and, definitely, more proactive. I would love to know all that you have learned and are doing to live with this disease, if you are willing! Aloha from Hawaii-

I meant “hopeful!”

I cut out dairy for 3 weeks as a test. Made no difference at all in mucus production.

Welcome to Mayo Connect. As you can see if you just look at all the discussions underway, this is a very active support group.

Many of us have been on this journey for years, so to ask "all you have learned" of any member can be overwhelming. Best to do some reading on the group, which will lead you to have more specific and answerable questions.

Maybe the best way to learn about various aspects would be to go to the top of this page, click on "MAC & Bronchiectasis" to see a the list of all discussions. Choose any that sound interesting and begin reading. Or go to the search box and enter a topic or key word/phrase you want to know more about. All posts containing the term will be listed for you.

When you see a post you would like to followup on, click "Reply" and type your response, then click "Reply" again to post it.

When you have a specific question to ask, go to the main group, choose the most likely discussion and post your question there.

Final tip - when you are replying to a post, look for the most recent ones. Members come and go, and you are more likely to get a reply from someone currently active.

Aha! Yes! Thank you! I’m a first time user so very new to this. I didn’t find too many headings for bronchiectasis, but I think I just haven’t gotten the hang of how to use the site. So, thank you, I will explore more of the specifics. Aloha!

Last month National Jewish Health gave a conference for patients with bronchiectasis and NTM disease. The nutrition supervisor, Michelle MacDonald, was very clear about the importance of maintaining a healthy weight. Research shows that a BMI over 18.5 is associated with a better prognosis. She also stressed the importance of increasing protein intake and she dispelled many of the myths associated with dairy and other issues.

As soon as the recording is available, I will share it with this group.

In the meantime, I suggest a consultation with a nutritionist. I have recommendations, but don’t know if I’m allowed to share them on this site or through a private message.

All the best,
Linda Esposito

I have had trouble maintaining my weight, losing nearly ten pounds off my already thin frame. I'm very excited to know that information on this topic may be coming our way. Thank you Linda!
