Chronic bacterial vaginosis after rectocele repair surgery

Posted by aethos @aethos, Apr 23, 2023

I had rectocele repair surgery 9 weeks ago and have had this vaginal infection since third week post op. I am on my 4th round of Flagyl but the infection either doesn't clear up or comes right back. The urogynecologist who did the surgery has not been helpful. I am wondering if this has anything to do with a stitch still remaining in my vagina or the urethra mesh she used. I tried getting in to Mayo to see a urogynocologist but they wouldn't take me. If I had known this would happen I would have opted for pessary or maybe I should have better researched my surgeon options. This has really negatively impacted my life as I am a very physically and sexually active 69 year old in a long term relationship. I have an appointment with another well regarded urogynocologist in two months if I can make it that long. Has anyone else experienced this issue after prolapse surgery? I previously had another prolapse repair about 5 years ago and have a bladder sling...no issues from that.

In my experience flagyl treats yeast infections. Boric acid suppositories treat bacterial vaginosis. They're over the counter. It's worth a shot. A solid women's probiotic like Garden of Life should help increase positive bacteria and help the vagina in the meantime.

Your doctor would know best.

Thx for your reply. Flagyl is what they prescribe for BV and fluconazole for yeast infections. I have read about boric acid. I want to know if anyone else had this issue after prolapse surgery and if it was caused by the stitches or the mesh.

Sorry to hear about your problems! I like what the previous person suggested.
I, in the other hand have some questions on fibroid tumors but don’t know which group to go to connect. Can anyone direct me to the right place please. Thanks!

This sounds terrible and I hope you're feeling better now! I am getting fitted for a pessary to help manage my rectocele tomorrow and am very hesitant to do the surgery (as a non sexually active 46 year old single mom of a young child) though I'm fairly certain I'm in good hands with my urogyn. I dealt with BV at one point about 10 years ago and it was awful, awful, awful. I hope you are getting relief.
