Heel pain after COVID-19 vaccine

Posted by kneadmuscles53 @kneadmuscles53, Apr 14, 2021

Five days before my first Covid 19 vaccine, after several hours of shopping and walking, I suddenly developed a bruised feeling under my right heel. Thinking it was from poorly fitting shoes, I next day switched to more padded and supportive shoes with a good arch support and gradually it began to subside. One hour after receiving my first vaccine shot, after sitting in my car all the hour, I stepped onto the parking lot to go shopping and felt the pain in my heel so strong that I couldn't walk! I sat down to stretch and massage my foot and then limped into the store to briefly shop. I lived very far away from any doctors, so wanted to stay close to the vaccine clinic for a while longer to make sure I had no serious side effects. For a few more days I researched causes of heel pain and called my doctor about it. I had guessed it was Plantar Fasciitis because the symptoms and relief from suggested therapies matched my own. My doctor suggested the vaccine caused inflammation and said to take tylenol if I needed it along with stretching, massage, icing and using arch supports. Two weeks after the second vaccine shot, along with intense self therapy, the pain is very gradually subsiding. It is very upsetting because I have never had any type of foot discomfort in my 72 years and some people in medical blogs said their intense discomfort wouldn't go away. Finally, yesterday I discovered wearing Nike Hyperdunk basketball sneakers with Heel the Pain inner soles completely eliminated the discomfort along with continuing the manual therapy. If it returns, I will visit my doctor. Is anyone else suffering from this condition and what is your story?

I live in Australia and have recently had my Covid Booster. The heel pain developed after a couple of days and is extremely painful. My podiatrist and Doctor are at a loss to help. I did suggest it came on after my booster but I do not think anyone believed me. I had this done on the 29th of October and the pain is getting worse, not better.
My toes are also numb and very uncomfortable during the night.
Has anyone recovered from this problem or has anyone any advice please?

My initial neurological symptom from my Covid vaccine injury was muscle spasms in my toes at night. I did not have heel pain.
I eventually developed sensory and motor peripheral neuropathy. I am much better now at 19 months.
Not much is known in terms of treatment. Based on extensive research, what I would have pursued in the early stages of my injury would have been: alpha-lipoic acid (but I don't tolerate it), palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) to decrease neuroinflammation, 5% Lidocaine patches to control nerve pain at night, and only wearing shoes with heavily padded insoles. The latter step allowed the nerves in my feet to heal. The first neurological test that I failed was the tuning fork vibration test. You might ask your podiatrist to do that test, if they have not already. I also lost both ankle and knee deep reflexes. Also, if the symptoms continue, the doctors should check whether you are ANA positive. If you are positive, they should periodically check your ANA titer. Mine increased 4-fold at the height of my neurological symptoms. Many of us have evidence that the nerve damage is an autoimmune reaction triggered by the vaccine.

Hello, is there a particular brand of pea you'd recommend? I've seen some of the reviews on Amazon (good and bad), hesitant to purchase for the very reason. Thanks. Good that you are feeling better now at 19months, wishing you continued health.

Thank you for the well wishes. I hope your symptoms improve. I used the Nootropics Depot brand of PEA. PEA is a dietary supplement and not a drug, so the benefit was subtle and occurred over time. I used it based on the advice of a famous Danish physician who helped our Facebook group for those with neurological injuries. There is good research evidence that PEA inhibits neuroinflammation and it has a good safety profile.

I had my 2nd Moderna booster in early Nov 2022. I would wake in the middle of the night to bad knee pain, would take ibuprofen and it would go away. Now 2 months later I am getting extreme heel pain. Icing it, taking ibuprofen and using gel heel inserts has helped. Dont have the pain every day. I am 64 and not very active so it was not caused by any injury. My husband 2 months later at age 72 is experiencing pain on the top of his foot, ice and tylenol has helped his pain. Craziest thing but no other explanation.
