I have c diff

Posted by rrf67 @rrf67, Jul 24, 2022

I have recently been diagnosed with c diff. I am currently on vancomycin 125mg four times a day. I have been bleeding for over 2 months now regularly with no solid movements whatsoever. I have urgency in the mornings and have to run to the bathroom only to be issues of blood and coffee ground feces, nothing ever solid. I just had a colonoscopy last Monday if showed diverticulum in the transverse colon and inflammation in the sigmoid colon in four different places. my question is when will I get better?? I have been dealing with this for a long time and it is debilitating. Will the vancomycin give me solid movements and will it stop the blood issues?? I just need to talk to someone who can identify with what I have. I have to call my gastro at the end of the week to let her know how I am doing. if I still have this what will be the next step?? Also, has anyone else with c diff smell an odor on themselves and when they go?? does c diff have a distinctive odor?

Hi. In 2011 I also was diagnosed with C-diff . It came on suddenly - on the 10th day of taking antibiotic amoxicillin given me by my dentist. I was in the hospital for a week (I tend towards low potassium so having diarrhea really lowers it). When I got out of hospital my Specialist continued my vancomycin for ten days (I took it as a compound medication - cheaper). I took probiotics as added protection which they also had started in the hospital. Fortunately, the c-diff never returned. I was very careful to disinfect everything to not reinfect myself. I hope you find relief soon.

I got Cdiff from augmentin the end of November 2022. December 5, I became very I’ll, fever, barely able to make it to the toilet and sometimes not getting there in time. After 2 days of the watery diarrhea and fever, not eating and barely drinking, I went to the ER. They did every test except for CDiff and sent me home with augmentin!! The next week my Dr took me off of the aug. and put me on a different antibiotic since I wasn’t feeling good still. The following week I became very I’ll again with fever and the watery diarrhea, went back to the ER, they gave me a bag of fluids and a bit of antibiotics in the IV. Sent me home with Flagyl. Things started to get a little better after a few days and a week later I became sicker than I already had been. Temp of 104* , watery diarrhea so bad. I had my son drive me to a hospital ER in Columbus and was admitted with CDiff and sepsis. I spent 8 days in the hospital, on liquid vancomycin, and sent home with another weeks worth. One week and 2 days later the CDiff was back ! I’m currently back on vancomycin capsules and the directions are to slowly wean me off after 2 weeks. They are now prescribing probiotics, I just hope it all works. I’ve also disinfected bathrooms etc with Clorox germicidal wipes. It feels like a bad dream going through this. I think I’ve almost close to PTSD WITH CDIFF !

@dmye I, too, had cdiff in 2018. I also spent 8 days in the hospital. I had 4 relapses, each time being given vancomycin. After doing this for 6 months, I finally got the fmt. Best decision for me! I truly believe that I wouldn't be here if I didn't have the fmt. I hope you have better luck with vancomycin than I did. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Did they ever have you take probiotics during or after the vancomycin treatment ? I’ve read about the transplant and im willing to do that if this doesn’t work, even though I can’t stand the thought of drinking the prep for colonoscopy ! It would be worth it. I just want this gone.

@dmye yes, they started me on probiotics after I left the hospital and I still take them every day. I am afraid to not take them!

What probiotics are you taking? My husband now has c diff for the second time and is taking vancomycin again. I am looking at probiotics, but every site I go to recommends a different one to take to try to avoid a recurrence.

@roso I alternate between 2 different probiotics. One is visbiome, formerly vsl#3, and the other is saccharomyces boulardii. I take one capsule a day. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask. Good luck to you both.

Another question, please. I understand that you take the s. boulardii and the visbiome on alternate days. I see that the instructions for the visbiome is for 2 capsules per day. But you take just one capsule on the visbiome day? Thanks.

@roso Yes, I take only one a day. I figured I would start out taking one and then if I needed to, I would increase it. Just passed 4 years of doing it this way. Fyi- I only weigh 88 lbs. So I don't know if this is a factor or not. Anyway, wishing all the best to you and your husband. Please let me know how he does. And if anything else comes up, please contact me anytime.
