Males with Factor IX Deficiency Hemophilia B: Daughters carriers?

Posted by carolvalentini1126 @carolvalentini1126, Mar 29, 2023

If a male has Factor IX Deficiency (Hemophilia B). Will his daughters become automatic carriers of the gene, or they have a 50% chance of inheriting the gene? I was under the impression the daughters are automatic carriers but have a 50/50 chance of passing down to their sons or daughters

Hi @carolvalentini1126, this fact sheet from the CDC does a good job of answering your question.
- Hemophilia Inheritance Patterns https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/hemophilia/course/Hemophilia_Patterns_v3.pdf

Excerpt:
"However, all daughters of a man with hemophilia are considered obligate carriers of hemophilia because they must receive the affected X chromosome from their fathers to be female, and they can pass the gene to their sons. A female with the hemophilia gene is called a hemophilia carrier."

I'm not a medical doctor so don't know which clotting meds would work for your daughter. It depends also on which type of hemophillia she has. Here is one resource: https://hemophilia.org.pk/ . I don't know if Doctors without Borders in Pakistan would be near you, but here is their site: https://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/what-we-do/where-we-work/pakistan
