My Experience on Evenity for Treating Osteoporosis

Posted by arlene7 @arlene7, Jul 7, 2020

Thought I would share for those considering or on Evenity for osteoporosis:
Afer much research and discussions with my GP and Cardiologist, I have decided to start my treatment with Evenity injections. As with all drugs, there are many side effects. My biggest concerns were stroke and heart attack. However, considering that I do no have any history for either, for me personally, the benefits outweigh the risks. As my GP said to me, "if everyone only thought about the side effects of the drugs, no one would be taking them".

I had my first injections (subcutaneously in the back of each arm) on June 30th. The nurse that administered the injections discussed the drug in depth, along with all the possibilities that may occur. She also mentioned that for all the patients that she has seen, none has had any side effects.

The injections are once a month for only one year, so I'm hoping that this works well for me and I can improve my bone density, especially in my spine, where I need it the most.

My endocronologist has also prescribed Hydrochlorthiazide for my idiopathic hypocalcemia. I have an appointment with an allergist this month to confirm whether I still have an allergy to sulfa drugs, since this drug contains sulfa. Apart from this I take D3 orally and try to obtain additional calcium through foods not supplements. Trying to walk 3-4 times a week and will begin with a few weight bearing exercises.

My journey began September, 2019 when I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis. After waiting to see three doctors, receiving three denials from insurance company for Evenity, which took several months, I am hopefully on my way for a favorful outcome.

Well these results look impressive to me... I just had my second round of Evenity injections 2 days ago, again slight side effects that I can live with. I don't know what medication I will follow up with after Evenity. I am a little concerned with a big dose of medication that is in Reclast, I have heard from other posts that some people get half a dosage. I will have to do more research and continue to follow everyone's posts to help me with my decision when the time comes. Thank you again for sharing your results. I wish you well in your journey.

Would you share with us info about your lifestyle habits? For ex do you exercise, have you eliminated alcohol, supplements, any other things that you do for your bone health.

Sure, I walk everyday 4-5 miles( I live in South Florida so the weather is good for walking year round) limit my alcohol use to once a week ( glass of wine). I do take a lot of supplements: Of course Calcium and Vitamin D, Collagen, CoQ10, Turmeric, Krill Oil, Probiotic, Boron, Biotin, Magnesium, Vitamin K, Zinc and a Greens Blend Superfood. I try and eat healthy most meals. I just started eating prunes which I found out about the benefits reading posts on this site. I feel everyone's situation is different. We all need to listen to our bodies and have good education and support from others that are going through the same experience.

Hello. I thought I would give my views on Evenity. I broke my knee a few years ago, it was a clean break and took about 6 weeks to heal. It was just bad luck that day, I fell in a “snow hole”, it was covered with snow and stepped right in it and turned and felt my knee break. I’m small boned and I was diagnosed with Osteoporosis several years ago in right hip, my hip doesn’t give me any problems, but because of my knee, my Dr recommendation was Evenity. The Rep just left when I arrived at the office for a checkup and I was the first one to try it. I trusted my Dr, no blood work was done to check my Calcium or anything. Well, started them in April. The first shots I could bearly move my arm for days, then my legs were always sore. I have had 4 shots and have been in terrible pain since. Going from a sitting position to standing, it so painful and knees causes me so pain. When I walk, it feels like I’m walking on golf balls. My feet feel cold all the time and I’m being poked with needles, my lower back hurts all away around to the groin area and my hips, thighs and calf’s feels like I ran 10 miles. I’m 58 and walk like I’m 80. I told my Dr, that I hurt so bad and I stopped the shots, his reply was let’s wait until October to get it out of your system. 2 weeks ago I was in outpatient because of the pain. I have switch Drs now and have to have test run next Wednesday. I see a chiropractor 3 times a week, my hips keep going out of place. Please, don’t get this shot, it’s not worth it. My Dr has never even prescribe anything else for me to help with Osteoporosis and everything I read says when all other medications have failed, I didn’t get that option. My body is in pain every single day and I’m totally pissed off that my Dr didn’t care and put me on these shots. Evenity is awful and it’s just not worth it. I pray It’ll get better and I will go with changing my diet and exercise and chiropractor care. There you have it. Thanks for reading!

Thank you so much for posting. My Dr. is pushing hard for me to go on Evenity. I have osteoporosis. I have some kidney issues and I have had a cracked tooth pulled in the past, bone loss in the jaw and another cracked tooth with a crown protecting it. Dr. is telling me that the atypical femur factures, necrosis of the jaw and side effects are rare and I'm worried about nothing. I just can't get with that cavalier attitude when the paper for the script gives me a phone number to call immediately if I am having pain in my legs after or during the injection therapy.

I can't seem to get past my gut telling me this is not a good idea. I have severe osteoporosis and the side effects I am reading that people are having, posted here and on other sites give me pause. I can't seem to get a real sense of what the actual patient experiences are from my Dr. I also have an issue with accountability. What happens if and when side effects occur? Who helps or undoes, or fixes those? I have to live with the consequences. I am asking myself if the reduction in quality of life which may or may not resolve and from what I have read above and elsewhere and are experienced on a daily basis are worth a few percentage points. I am wondering what support and active participation the pharma company is taking to support and address the issues/ side effects women are experiencing or is it simply, "well, we listed the risks, sorry", and they get on with their day while we live with these issues.

I am not saying to stick one's head in the sand or be in denial, but I feel like I have to really exhaust all possible solutions that are not medication based. An inclusive diet, exercise, cardio, energetic and mind/action approach. I want my decision to feel like I am doing this with as much awareness as possible because at the end of the day, the only one who will have to live with this is me. And I do not want to act out of fear or feel pressured.

These are all the issues that are circling around in my head given my recent not great dexa scan. I have healthy bone density in my femur, thighs. Spine is problematic. Do I want to trade this and feeling great now for all the irreversible risks? It takes a good two years for bone to remodel and if I am diligent, i mean really diligent, leaving no stone unturned and give myself the best non-med care and protocal, can I make a difference? That is where I am and that is what i am leaning towards vs a stonger spine but feeling horrible on a daily basis with no resolution of issues.

Anyone else have these feelings? Everyone who posted here at the onset of your treatment, I'd be interested to know how you are feeling as you progress. I am hoping to hear that it's all going well. I want to hear that, as this is still a very new drug and I have a lot of sensitivities. I await your truthful and hopefully good and not so good responses, i want to hear it all as I think this will be helpful to all.

Thank you.

I think we all feel that way. We all hear of the side effects of the different medications and it's terrifying. And the fear of fracture is terrifying as well. So, what to do??
I'll share my story again in response to your post as you weigh this important decision. I, like many, did not want to go on meds. I was diagnosed at 57, shocked to learn I had osteoporosis even though I was extremely health conscious and exercised daily (hiking, dance, weight training, etc). I rejected meds, deciding instead to go all-in on improving my density naturally. I was convinced that if I just paid even greater attention to my already healthy diet and lifestyle, I could definitely achieve the results I was looking for. I began to calculate my daily nutrition to make sure I met all of my daily goals. I increased my exercise, got a weighted vest, a standing desk so that I never sat at my computer any more, strengthened my core and worked out about 2 hours a day. I wanted to give it a full 2 years to get optimal results. Epic fail. In the 2 years of extreme diligence, my spine went from 2.8 to -3.2. I was devastated once again. At that point, I knew that I had to get over my fear of the meds as I could not continue in this decline. I decided on Forteo as it was a bone builder specifically at the spine. I had no side effects and a small gain ending with my spine at -2.9. Had I gone on Forteo from the start, that gain would have brought me out of osteoporosis but now, that is not in my sights. After Forteo, in my early 60's, I chose bioidentical hormones as the most "natural" approach to holding onto my gains. I have somewhat maintained the level in my spine and had some increase in my hips. It is very easy to lose bone in menopause but it is very very difficult to gain it back, and for most, it is impossible. It's just not the way the body works as we age.
I don't know your age or your level of osteoporosis but I just thought I'd share my story of trying to achieve this naturally with 100% effort and 100% fail.

Thank you for your honest and thoughtful reply. I am 60 and I have a history of breast cancer in my family and pancreatic cancer and being monitored si bio identicals are out or I would do in a heartbeat.

With low blood pressure and allergy to sulfa the blood pressure meds are not good option.

Also kidney issues which are non starter for a lot of these meds. Which is why I am asking bc I have a lot to navigate. I think my concern is also yes - the first few months or year or two the Gail is there but doesn’t stay and requires further meds and in the longer term is when the atypical femur fractures happen as do other complications - I am trying to get comfortable with the risks and long term effects. It’s possible I could do great on these. Issue is that I have taken meds before where drs say it’s okay and have had very bad side effects some long lasting and I am also navigating the trade off.

I would love to hear how people are doing 5 or more years down the line as I know this is not a one and done type of thing.

Thank you again for your response. It is very helpful.

Lots of challenges to consider and weigh. It makes it all the more difficult. I also have very low BP so was concerned about that possibly being an issue on Forteo. Thankfully it wasn't, but of course we are all different and therefore may react differently. Can you consider Evista? I know it's not one of the powerhouse drugs and not one of the first ones docs recommend but it does have some bone building effects of the spine and is protective against breast cancer. At the point that I will need to go off HRT, I would consider it.

I just had my 8th shot of Evenity and had no problems. I am starting to feel stronger so I hope the Evenity is working. I need back surgery and have to get my numbers up.

I just had my 12th shot of Evenity without any side effect. I feel very well and am expecting the results of my DXA about after one month which I will announce (before & after) in May.
