Tapering Seroquel and/or Mirtazapine
My 24 year old son was started on Seroquel & Mirtazapine when he was in the throws of drug addiction. He’s currently taking 600 mg Seroquel and 30 mg mirtazapine, and has been drug free for over a year now. He does not have psychosis, but does have significant depression & anxiety. He wants to try tapering off them. Is it wise to taper both at the same time, or try one and then the other?
Thanks for any input.

Taper one then the other.
Taper SLOWLY
If withdrawal symptoms start he's probably tapering too fast.

1 ReactionWhen I was on Lyrica and Cymbalta, I was told by my doctor to taper off the Lyrica and then the Cymbalta. It threw my body into a bit of a mess but I’m sure it would have been way worse to stop them both at once. Good luck to your son. 🤗

1 ReactionThank you for your response. One at a time seems wiser intuitively, but I appreciate that confirmation. Also the advice to go slowly. He is impatient to get off, but we will heed your caution.

1 ReactionI have been in depression since January 2021 or earlier but started taking medicines since March 29 2025
I was taking Mirtazapine for about 3 months and I didn’t feel well from the medication. I couldn’t get in touch with the doctor to see what he suggested I do, long story short, I simply weaned myself by slowly reducing a day each week and I finally got off of them. I don’t recommend that you do this but I felt fine with my own method, you can also ask the pharmacy but they will probably tell you to contact your doctor. I would like to add that this drug had more side effects than benefits for me but I have also read stories that people found it very helpful.

Since you haven’t been on it long, let your doctor know you want to stop it. I could not take mirtazapine because it made me so hungry and I do not want to gain more weight. They tried different medications and combinations that didn’t work for me for over a year. I finally landed on a combination of Sertraline and Bupropion that works some for my major depression.
What other medications have you tried?
@afridi
I meant to mention I only took one pill of mirtazapine and immediately stopped since the hunger symptoms started immediately and I got scared. Since you haven’t been on it about a month, you will want to gradually wean off it. It is ideal to work with your doctor but you may be able to do it yourself.

1 ReactionI hear you! I have been taking Mirtazapine for almost 20 years. I just have had enough. I gained so much weight, can't enjoy the foods I like because I am always worried about weight.
I will say it helped for a time. But then I think it just became a habit. I've been cutting pills for awhile and am now down to 1.75 mg. Soon to be off completely.
I think in retrospect that these drugs have their place. I just think we take them for too long.
Hope you can get through this time without too much trouble.

4 ReactionsI consulted my GP and weaned off it over an 8 week period, just take regular dose for 5 days then one off for a day for two cycles and follow that pattern increasing the days off each fortnight.
