Anyone taking Flecainide or Multag for arrhythmias?

Posted by dbug7857 @dbug7857, Mar 8, 2021

My EP put me on flecainide about six weeks ago 50 mg twice a day and recently upped it to 75 mg twice a day. Every time I take the flecainide about an hour or so later I go into a fib and I think the flecainide is causing it. I want to stop taking it but not sure how to wean off. Has anyone else had this problem?

Saw a physiologist yesterday.
Of course they tried to talk me into an ablation which I am not to keen on doing for a variety of reasons.
We settled on me taking flecainide.
Wondering does anyone take it too.
And what your experience with it may be.
Thanks

Hi Krav,
I have several heart rhythm issues, including AFib, PACs, PVCs, tachycardia and bradycardia. I am followed by both Cardiology and Cardiac Electrophysiology providers. They have been so helpful.

I was started on 50 mg of Flecainide and 5 mg of Eliquis after a 7 hour episode of AFib over a year ago. I did not have any side effects, but I slowly tapered the meds down to 1/4 of a tablet of each twice a day, and I have not had any AFib episodes or serious arrhythmias. I attribute my success to following the guidelines in the book AFib Cure written by two esteemed Cardiac Electrophysiologists. This is a fabulous book that I highly recommend you read. It can be purchased on Amazon.

Diet and Exercise were important components for my success. I quickly learned that exercise needs to be customized for each person. It has taken me over a year to find a home program that works for me , and to slowly increase my duration of exercise without triggering arrhythmias. I have also been working with a physical therapist on strength training, diaphragm breathing, and balance.

I carefully monitor my heart's response to exercise with an Apple Watch, Lookee Tech 2 lead ECG, Nonin Connect or Lookee Tech Sleep pro oximeter, and Omron wrist blood pressure. I can quickly see when I have pushed my heart too hard by drops in my blood oxygen level, slight chest pain, and arrhythmias appearing.

I am now jogging indoors 6 miles (12 minute/mile) within my target heart rate zone for my age of 69. I rarely see anymore arrhythmias. I feel like I have cured my AFib through lifestyle changes.

I wish you the best in finding an integrated program to help improve your heart health.

Thank you for your response.
I am happy for you that you are doing so well.
I dont know if you have seen any of my earlier posts perhaps if you get a chance you can look at the one No Rhyme or Reason which pretty much describes me and my workouts etc.
Doing 6 miles is great and thanks for the info on the A-Fib Cure book.
I am familiar with it but have not read it.
Please stay in touch and let me know how you are doing.

I started flecainide last Sunday March 26 had no episodes that Sunday and Mon, Tuesday had an episode and stayed in it till Thursday.
I never stay in AFib that long.
At most perhaps one day.
I felt it was to coincidental so I stopped it on my own,
I felt it was ok to do that since I only took it for 4 days and I did not want it to build up in my system.
I can’t say for sure that it was the flecainide however I know my own body.
Now I am trying Multaq just started last night Friday.
When I was first diagnosed with AFib I was on Multaq however another cardiologist (I have 2 homes ) In my second home state took my off it because I am asymptomatic.
This first time I was on it for 6 months.
The flecainide and now the Multaq were prescribed by an EP who I saw for the first time on Thursday the 23rd.
Of course they right from the start were trying to sell me an ablation which I do not want to go down that road.
Hope I did the right thing
I HATE taking any drugs.
Please read my earlier posts get an idea off what type of person I am and how I conduct my life, and some of my other thought about AFib.

Are you sure you are going into AFIB after about an hour? And, are you taking a beta blocker with your Flecainide along with an anticoagulant?

I take 100 mg of Flecainide twice daily along with 25 mg of Metoprolol Succinate once a day. It is normally recommended to take a beta blocker such as Metoprolol when taking Flecainide to prevent complications such as yours.

If your doctor who prescribed Flecainide didn’t prescribe a beta blocker it would be wise to seek another opinion.

Thank you for your response. No I am not going into A-Fib after about an hour.
The reason I do not take a beta blocker is I have a low resting pulse rate usually in the 50’s sometimes in the 40’s.
this is not due to any condition I was always told I have an athletic heart due to years of working out etc.
So a beta blocker would really slow me further.
Spoke to pharmacist, as well my daughter is a pharmacist and was told beta blocker is not always prescribed with flecainide it all depends. I would guess your resting pulse rate is higher. As well I can be in A-Fib with BPM in the 60’s or 70’s perhaps 80’s. I have even had it in the 50”s

I have the Sam problem of low blood pressure and had an ablation 7 months ago and also have been on 50 milligrams of flecainide and 5 milligrams of elliquis. I have had three episodes of afib since that I have taken an additional 50 mg. of flecainide and it works. My Dr. wants to insert a LINQ System to continually monitor my heart. Not sure I want to commit to a device for three years when I am aware when I’m in AFIB. At the same time I hate taking these two pills twice a day. I’m 64 and in otherwise good health, walking 4 miles a day and staying active.

I don't go into afib but I feel a trembling in my chest. My face burns and flushes. I also experience an itching on my arms. Simply put, Flecanide is a very hard drug for me to take. I'm very sorry that you are have undesirable side effects and hope your EP can resolve them.
