When I was first diagnosed with gout the first approach was a round of steroids. Once the gout calmed down I was put on allopurinol. I was eventually diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. But I learned in particular with my gout to recognize which foods was a trigger for me. Ultimately due to my rheumatoid arthritis I have made major modifications to my diet to work along with the medications I have been put on to help with the gout/rheumatoid arthritis issues.
Sorry you going through this gout pain is excruciating.

A family member takes prescription Allopurinol 300 mg. daily. Heat (get in a hot tub if you can) and soak the toe or wherever you have gout at. Gout is a form of arthritis. Also, my family member is given Colchocine (not sure of mg) if they get in a bad flare up. The foods that bring on gout for him are orange juice, shrimp and barbeque. I hope this helps. God Bless.

Hi, my husband has had gout for 20 years, diet changes were not enough as it was inherited. He tried allpurinol and colchicine, but was allergic to the fillers. These days he drinks tart cherry juice 4 ounces 2 to 3 times a day as soon as symptoms appear. Attack is usually gone in 2-3 days. Make sure the drink is pure juice and not a diluted down beverage.

I have had steroids, colchicine, voltaren after multiple flares take allopurinol and tart cherry caplets still had flare ups. Tried to understand trigger foods but found the internet had so many conflicting things about the different foods. So I asked to see a nutritionist. I have been following the list she gave me and have not had a flare since. Idea is to stay away from purines in your diet was so surprised to find vegetables on the list. I do miss my fishes I can have salmon though.

Thanks, it had not occurred to me to see a nutritionist. I will look into it. You are so right about the conflicting information.

My son-in-law, 35 yrs old, has struggled with gout for about 5 yrs. He’s a cherry tree farmer and eats cherries through out the season, but gets no or little relief specifically from cherries.

My hubby tried sweet cherry juice and it had no effect on his gout. Had to be tart juice only. Seems like the variety of cherries makes the difference.

@jackiie Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! as you can see, you're certainly not alone in having a gout attack. How well I recall my first attack! Like many others, it came on suddenly. Since then I have been on allopurinol 100 mg once a day. I stay away from pork/pork products, shellfish, purines [sure do miss mushrooms!], alcoholic beverages, and a lot of red meat. It seems each person will find the best combination of what works for them.

Gout is a form of arthritis, and here is what Mayo Clinic has to say about it all: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/gout/symptoms-causes/syc-20372897
