Reclast Infusions: Side-effects & Recovery time
I just had a reclast infusion last week and have had serious side effects. I had the worst flue like aching for 5 days then my lefty arm became full of inflammation in the wrist, elbow and shoulder which caused extreme pain and I lost the ability to straighten my elbow. Ultrasound showed huge amounts of fluid throughout the arm. The right arm is now starting to have the same symptoms. The pain is excruciating. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Neither the ER doctor nor the Dr. who prescribed the procedure knew what to do to ease the symptoms. Both arms from fingertips to shoulder are swollen and neither elbow will straighten. Anyone else have adverse reactions to the reclast infusion? If yes, how long did it last?

Took Evenity, then Reclast over 3 months ago. I see my dentist every 6 months, user a sonicare toothbrush and floss every night. I have healthy teeth & gums and have had no issues.
* I am grateful that’s not a problem.
Thank you for your reply. I go every 3 months for a cleaning since I have periodontal.
Fortunate to have all my teeth except one. I was just wondering what happens if one needs to be pulled or loose since reclast stays in your system for quite awhile.
I had a similar, less severe reaction to my first Reclast infusion last November. My right knee swelled up and hurt very badly and I could barely hobble around the house! I put cold packs on it and laid on the couch and it went away after a few days. I had no previous knee problems.
Now, almost 4 months later, I have some arthritis like pains in my hands in the morning that are mild but get better as I move them.
I’ve had good results from the meds but I’m taking a break - maybe for a year (after this year).
I think it’s not a problem- you may be given antibiotics before? Good question for your oral surgeon.
@leeosteo I will share my results! I won't know the follow up plan until I get the scores.
Thanks. My fingers are crossed for you!
I did reclast yearly for the last 3 years. I did not do it this year because I decided not to. I have lost a couple of teeth. Didn't think to blame it on reclast. The first one I didn't replace. Second one I'm having an implant because it's really effecting my chewing. Pulling was no issue on either. I'm about to do the second step on the implant next week. I'm osteopenia. I discussed this with my dentist. He said if it was a lower jaw tooth he'd be concerned but he felt I'd be fine with this upper jaw tooth. He was actually the one to talk to me about exercising and doing other things instead of the medication.
I had a T-score of 4.9. I took Prolia for 2 years with absolutely no improvement in my T-score. I was then started on Forteo and developed high blood calcium levels after the first month. I have taken Actonel in the past which produced sever GERD to the point where my vocal chords were burnt.
My rheumatologist now wants to start me on Reclast infusions which, like Actonel, is a biophosphate.
I am scared to death to have something infused which will stay in my body for one year, especially with my history of complications with Osteoporosis drugs.
I have dental problems i blame on reclast. a oral surgon requests a ctx blood test before treating a person. my test was bad. so i have to go to Mayo clinic for some extractions. I have been on reclast 3 years. No other problems. ncylucy
I have had a total of 5 years on Reclast. 3 years almost 10 years ago and 2 years recently. No dental problems. No reactions to the medication. It helped my bones but the last injection showed no improvement so last year I started Prolia. I had a big gain on Prolia.
