Lost Smell and Taste after COVID

Posted by seanc6437 @seanc6437, Sep 12, 2021

So I had Covid in the beginning of March. Had all the symptoms and lost my taste and smell. I had 0 sense of smell or taste for a couple weeks. Ever since then everything I eat and smell does not smell or taste how I remember. Often times the food will taste rotten or sour. Has this happened to anyone else cause this has been going on for 6 months now and I would like to know if this is a permanent effect or not?

I have been smelling things daily for months. What Dr's told me to do,as a generic response. Told me something should trigger it back. It is more frustrating and depressing than I ever imagined. My dad has not had a sense of smell for years due to a motorcycle accident. I never thought much of it,but my gosh, it's awful.
I try to have a sense pf humor, and say it's saving me money on thos expensive shampoos and body washes, since I can't smell anymore 😫

I lost my sense of smell due to Covid in July 2021. It has never returned and professionals have told me it not. Like others in here, once in a great while I will catch a weak random whiff of something. I guess it is a better option compared to others whom lost their lives due to Covid.

I always loved to cook, rarely had to use a recipe.....just taste it & season. The JOY of cooking! Now terrible. I have very little appetite, but even if I do get hungry for something, I spend time getting it ready and then cannot even taste. Lost weight ,contributes to fatigue.

my only covid symptom after testing positive in 2020 was loss of smell; 2 yrs. into this and certain foods smell putrid or don't taste the way they used to taste before getting covid. my biggest issue was insomnia (even with 3 rx for sleep) and finally after 2 yr. and adding cbd/cbg/cbn to my med combo, can i get 8 hr. sleep.

I am 8 months out from having lost my sense of smell and taste since having had Covid. I can smell if I put something right under my nose, but not smell in the environment and still cant taste food. I've done the oil smelling but wonder if anyone has tried Vitamin A through a nasal inhaler or other strategies I am reading about. My ENT checked that there is nothing physically wrong (CT scan) and tried steroids.
Now just says, time will heal or not. Any strategies? Thanks.

I can relate, as I was diagnosed with smell/taste disorder, though mine is a little different from most. I also have a constant bitter taste. How were you diagnosed? Did you take smell test on booklets with various fragrances? Had your ENT seen this kind of thing before?

How severe was your covid? Do you have other LC symptoms? Were you taking any meds when smell/taste was disrupted?

I haven’t heard of Vitamin A suggestion, but will try it. Any risks that you read in your research?

People don’t realize how terrible this is. I actually have pretty good smell ability now, I think…..taste improving, but bitter taste going strong 7 months post covid.

I lost my taste and smell in December of 2022 and to this date don’t have it back. Only taste a slight salty, sweet or sour taste on my tongue occasionally, not always. I can smell coffee grounds most days, but not all. I don’t ever get hungry or have a taste for anything any longer. I feel your pain.
