When using a nasal cpap machine, my mouth fills up with air ?

Posted by barbflynn @barbflynn, Mar 12, 2023

I've only been using my cpap machine for 5 days. I've noticed that sometimes my mouth will fill with air and it seems as if it wants "out."
Any suggestions? Am I doing something wrong?

Yesterday I noticed that if my tongue isn't against roof of mouth or inside front teeth, my mouth fills with air too. If you move your tongue and block either your throat or those 2 little holes in back upper roof of mouth, the air will fill up your mouth.

I have a Resmed Airsense 11 machine that starts at 4 then ramps up to 10. I also use the N20 nasal pillow . For me the best thing is the nasal pillow.
When you order one it’s in 3 different sizes. I use medium and that’s fine for me.
I also have air coming out of my mouth when I sleep with my mouth open.
I have gotten used to it as it wakes me up most times. The ideal would be to have the well fitted headgear and Pillow.
The side straps that attach to the magnets holds the pillow in place and the top straps hold the whole thing to your head. The trick is not to have it too tight or too loose. It takes time to adjust it just right for you.

I have the same machine. I have been using it over a year now. One thing I have found with the pillow is replacing it more often than you think. It stays in place and works better. I have a strap that has two bands. I put one on top of my head and one under my hair at the back of my head.

Apria of East Providence RI. They email me when I need an upgrade. Like my pillows come in once a month with environmental filters.
Medicare takes care of the cost’s through my insurance provider.

Apria also has an Apria.com website but they don’t take insurance, including Medicare. So be careful when ordering from Apria online if you have Medicare. It won’t accept your insurance. That’s why I gave you the East Providence brick and mortar store.

Apria is basically all over the country if not the world. My East Providence order came out of Michigan so you can call any actual store and the order may come from another State so it doesn’t matter where you are. Google it if you’re interested. I’m sure there’s one near you.
Just don’t use the Apria.com website unless you want to pay out of pocket.

Just to be clear on the terminology, the nasal 'pillow' is the flat 'moustache-like' appliance with two nipples that insert directly into the nostrils. Otherwise, and in the case of the N20 (which I also use) it is properly called a 'cushion'. Dunno why, but that's the terminology widely adopted over on apneaboard.com.

Chipmunk cheeks, the oft-reported complaint about inflated mouths using PAP therapy, is a problem for most of us. You can get used to it. Wearing your machine during the day, say while reading, and letting the device inflate your cheeks will quickly have you getting used to the sensation, at which it won't be nearly as intrusive or arousing during your sleep.

Also, some of us, myself included, must tape across our lips during sleep. Otherwise, our lips separate, having lost tone, and the therapeutic advantage offered by the machine will thereby be lost as the pressure forces the lips apart and the air intended to inflate your airway is lost. If you're reading, and in that boat, and there are legions of us, get 3M strong hold or light hold blue tapes, or a brand called 'Somnifix' made for this purpose.

Finally, somebody else with my problem. I've been on CPAP for roughly 12 years. I have gotten no answers from my sleep doc about my mouth filling with air all night long. I use mouth tape now, but I have to leave a section in the middle of my mouth open to let this air escape. I still need to wake up to blow it out and I do this ALL NIGHT LONG. I have gotten no answers that have helped me. Everyone says to park the tongue at the roof of the mouth. I have a tiny mouth. There is nowhere else for the tongue to even go. This isn't working and I'm tired all day long. It seems very few people are really familiar with this problem.

I'm having the same problem, for a very long time, too... like 5 months. What could be causing me to have issues with the tongue sealing maneuver everyone talks about? Also, I've seen two people mention two holes at the top of the mouth. I don't understand what that is. I've tried wearing a chinstrap and my mouth still fills with air until I open my lips and blow it out. I tried a full face mask for the last month, but my daily headaches became even more debilitating from the strap at the base of my neck.

I hear you, I have tried a cpap on a couple of occasions and I have no idea how anyone gets used to that sensation of the air flooding down my throat. My current sleep doc (I've tried 4 lol) told me to try a sleep appliance and I am currently in process of having one made for me. He thinks and so does the sleep dentist that my tongue, which is a muscle, is relaxing at night and causing my issues. I don't even have issues most nights, just a couple times a week on average. If the appliance doesnt work I'm not doing anything, done with cpap etc. Best to you!

I have just started using the Luna G3 APAP with the Rio II nasal cushions.

I have to admit that this being my first attempt at using any CPAP device, I am miserable and in need of a good night's sleep! lol

I very much appreciate this discussion, as I have been having the same issue with air 'collecting' in my mouth and having to blow it out several times nightly. I was afraid that this was due to some issue with my COPD, but having read the suggestions and advice here, I see that this is pretty much normal. Thank you all!!

Thank you for the info. Did you find your air pillow at a medical supply place?

I just started on the nasal mask. My pressure is so high that it blew off the masks in the full face mask. I've been taping my mouth shut for a week or so. Today, I got the chin guard from our medical supply company. I took a nap and it worked great. I just used any surgical tape from the pharmacy. Although, they do have special tape designed for sleep apnea. Good Luck!

I was using tape for a week or so. I worked great. Today, I used the chin guard for a 2 hour nap and it worked well. Have you tried the chin guard.
