Stage 3 Kidney Disease and Diet: What can I eat?

Posted by carnes @carnes, Jun 11, 2018

It seems there is very little you can eat that is healthy for the Kidneys. The web site Davida has plenty of food on it but contradicts what other sources say. Anyone know anything for breakfast, lunch and dinner that does not have any sugar or flour bodies the obvious boring or bland foods good for Kidneys and I’m allergic to sugar of any kind of sweetener and flour. Thank you.

I hear you about the confusion caused sometimes on food labels! All we can really do is to watch our food intake and keep drinking enough water & getting enough exercise. Fingers crossed!

You have stage 3 CKD, so diet plays a big role. But are you also a stone maker? I’m curious to know if most people with CKD are also stone makers. I had 4 surgeries in 2 years to remove stones, and another was to replace my ureter that was dead from a stuck stone. Any replies will be greatly appreciated and helpful.

Hugs to you. I have not had stones. I know people who battle them constantly and it's miserable for them. 🙁

Yes, I have stones but they’re not ready to be removed yet. I will still add one operation to take them out. I would appreciate more information about the food you can eat. What is the real diet helps or not

I’ve never had stones, but was diagnosed with Stage 4 CKD in 2018 due to severe oxylate damage. My GFR was 15, Creatinine 3.80 and hemoglobin 7.5. I immediately went on a low oxylate diet and increased my hydration to 3L a day. As a result, I’ve been able to raise my GFR to 42 and lower my Creatinine to 1.77. I’ve used the follow list as a guide for my nutrition- https://kidneystones.uchicago.edu/how-to-eat-a-low-oxalate-diet/

To randyr,
Thank you for your answer to leroyjames. I've been posting for the past few months about my daughter's horrible and undiagnosed condition with bladder and pelvic pain, but nobody has remarked on it. She finally got some answers when her husband heard a podcast on a carnivore diet. The mention of the words, "...like sitting on shards of glass" struck him since that was just what my daughter had been describing for the past 5 years to her many doctors. As a nurse having eaten a mainly vegetarian diet for 38 years, she apparently is severely oxalate toxic. It was only after reading Sally Norton's book about this toxicity that she finally got some answers. Please bring this condition to the attention of all the people who are getting no answers to their horrible chronic pain. It's not the answer for everyone but my family has had a history of kidney disease and stones. Easing up on oxalates must be done slowly, and after just 3 months of gradually making some changes, her life is finally improving, thanks to Sally Norton.

The Kidney Dietitian provides a list of low & high oxylate foods. You might look her up. Hope this helps.

Hi… new here. Diagnosed with Stage 3a CKD 6 months ago. Like you I was totally baffled by all the contradictory info out there and seemingly total lack of knowledge of my primary doc. Am eating primarily vegan now after finding what I believe to be the newest research from reputable sources. We will see as I haven’t had new lab work done yet. Sources I found very helpful were National Kidney Foundation, Assoc. of Kidney Patients has some great nutrition reference material available online. I also follow Reg. Renal Dietitian Emily Campbell on her blog. These folks are up to date. It seems until research has been out for 10 years, medical community doesn’t dispense it. There has been much learned I. The last 5 years or so. Try not to panic or be angry “ they” didn’t mention it until big changes need to be made., like I did as it just delays needed action. 😊There are thousands of wonderful recipes out there for you and good support.
