Stage 3 Kidney Disease and Diet: What can I eat?

Posted by carnes @carnes, Jun 11, 2018

It seems there is very little you can eat that is healthy for the Kidneys. The web site Davida has plenty of food on it but contradicts what other sources say. Anyone know anything for breakfast, lunch and dinner that does not have any sugar or flour bodies the obvious boring or bland foods good for Kidneys and I’m allergic to sugar of any kind of sweetener and flour. Thank you.

It’s hard for me to imagine a doctor who wouldn’t refer you immediately to a dietitian! You might be able to Google dietitians for your area, contact them and see if they take your insurance.
For us, our very best find was Monk fruit with erythritol to use as a sugar substitute. It can be purchased at Costco or through Amazon. Congratulations on that fantastic weight change!

Check out that sugar substitute! Recent warnings about it causing heart disease! Google it!

I agree about the dietician. My doctor never referred me. I found a renal dietitian and pay for her myself!

Thanks, I know there are warnings...we read them before we started using it but for us the risk of high blood sugars is worse and, sad to say, we're not willing to give up sweets all together.

As a newly diagnosed Stage 3 CKD patient (eGFR 54 in August 2022) and a new member here, I find your story fascinating and informative. Thank you for sharing it. I've visited a dietician once within the past two years but left with more questions unanswered than answered. I appreciate the research you've done into foods (good & not-so-good) for CKD and also look forward to when you are allowed to link URLs for us to check into. Just lately, I've veered more into the vegetarian side of things (more for improving problems with IBS/Constipation than because of CKD). I am very motivated to eat as healthy as possible for my condition. I look forward to your sharing more of your journey with your veggie diet.

I am at beginnings of stage 3 & mainly read package labels to see how much potassium, phosphorus, cholesterol, sodium, sugars, flour, trying to reduce proteins-Avoiding when possible ! Too often one of them is high when others are 0 or low. There does seem to be contradictory information on what is ok & what isn’t !

Hi Poppy67, I’m LittleBit71
Do you have an app for the clinic or hospital you use? It will give you your test results so you can keep check. I live in Alabama and my doctors are at a hospital called Brookwood Baptist Clinic. All my doctors are on it and I get my blood tests and other kinds of test on this app. If you don’t have one check with your doctor and see if they have one. I really hope this helps.

I went to my doctor today for my 6 month check up and I told him what I’ve been eating.
Turkey breast cutlets
Ground turkey 95%fat free
Chicken
Tilapia
I steam frozen veggies
With no salt and low potassium.
Blueberries
Grapes
None processed cheddar cheese. Sargento is the best. It says on package Natural.
I never fry or use any kind of batter on my meats. I bake, roast or air fry and use only Mrs Dash seasoning.
My CKD use to be 1 point being stage 4. It’s now almost at stage 2.
The doctor told me to keep doing what I’m doing.

Hi, this is eirrol— I wonder if anyone knows if the Adele Davis books are considered relevant today in the nutrition for prevention/ treatment of medical conditions. I was recently introduced to these books by a lady who has known about them since the 1970s. This author seems to be almost on par with Linus Pauling with research on nutrition as medicine. I would like to know if there is center, department, organization, carrying on her work. I need That level of knowledge in my treatment for my kidneys and for my blood pressure. Thanks, in advance, to anyone who can help.

I hear you about the confusion caused sometimes on food labels! All we can really do is to watch our food intake and keep drinking enough water & getting enough exercise. Fingers crossed!
