Ear Tinnitus and Pain with Neuropathy

Posted by cwallen9 @cwallen9, Jan 29, 2019

Does anyone have severe tinnitus and ear pain with their neuropathy? I have small fiber and autonomic neuropathy and I have been getting severe tinnitus (roaring and high pitch noise) and a feeling of pressure and pain for the last month. I am wondering if the neuropathy and/or medications are causing it. I am on gabopentin, cymbalta, and NSAIDS.

I have had idiopathic neuropathy in both feet and legs up to my knees since April 2005. My pain is manageable (level 4-5) by taking Neurontin, tramadol and aleve. I also have post tinnitus in both ears, post vertigo and post balance issues that were caused by a concussion in late September 2022. I landed on the left side of my head and the symptoms started in varying degrees the next day - balance issues first, vertigo a week later and then tinnitus a week after that. I did PT and OT. for a month with some improvement. A month before I fell, I woke up one morning and had weird feelings all over from my knees up to the top of my head, down to my fingertips and all over my face including my lips (which just drives me crazy). I saw my doctor who did the pin pricks all over from the bottoms of my feet and up. I wore a blindfold so I couldn’t see her and what she was doing. Needless to say I didn’t feel anything. I remember asking her when was she going to start poking me? She answered that she was already done. During that time I had some symptoms of COVID, but tested negative so we don’t know what caused it to spread all of a sudden.

It should read post concussion tinnitus, post concussion vertigo and post concussion balance issues. (sorry for the confusion)

Agreed. I also began tinnitus from exposure to loud music.

Mine came from Mal de Debarquement, I think. I took a long train ride and had to take scopalamine to stop feeling the train weeks after the trip. My right ear never recovered. Pain and tinnitus, and the ENT is stumped. Sent me on my way with three completely wasted office visits and no plan of treatment, and no referral to someone who may be able to help.

So goes American medicine.

I admit to bitterness. I know doctors see me as "less than" because I'm fat. I'm sent on my way a lot.

I had never heard of mal de débarquement until you mentioned it but I now know that I have experienced it. I took a cruise pre-pandemic of course. It was a bit rough and I could feel the ship swaying while I was in bed.For weeks afterward every time I would go to bed I felt as though I was on a ship. Didn’t really mind the sensation and didn’t notice any increase in my tinnitus. Sorry you are a tinnitus sufferer. There is no cure and no controlling it. Probably that is why Drs. Know they can’t help anyone complaining of tinnitus. Check out the zAmerican Tinnitus Association for up to date info and suggestions.

If you are able, see an ENT for evaluation & hearing test. I developed an issue in my left ear about a month ago & I don't think it's related to my neuropathy. I am being treated with a sterioid 12 pack & anti-viral meds. The doctor has ordered an MRI, to rule out a tumor. The tinnitus is very unpleasant. I purchased a little "white noise" device on Amazon & it helps a bit, especially when trying to get to sleep. For me, sleep deprivation triggers neuropathy episodes that can last for days, so the tinnitus (and the new meds) were especially troubling. I've been on Gabapentin for a about 18 months, as well. Sometimes it feels like the universe is conspiring to drive me out of my mind.

I saw two ENT's (one for a second opinion) & shared both with my PCP. They all suspected it could be a viral infection. The second ENT increased the dosage of Valacyclovir for 7 days. Probably just another stab in the dark. I've seen no improvement & am bracing myself for perpetual, high pitched hissing in my ear for the rest of my life.

Hi cher27
The most important here is for you to not get discouraged, and resign to the fact that you have the most puzzling disease "Peripheral neuropathy".
No cure they say, but I never give up trying everything that may make sense and may help, including R-ALA, and B12. And a few other vitamins.
I just now, about one month ago, developed tinnitus. I will see my ear doctor even, tinnitus is in the brain not in the ear.
Be positive don't lose faith. And in the worst scenario resign that you have to live that way until the end and make adjustments to your lifestyle, OR a cure may surface somehow and we will be saved from this plague.
But the most important to mention here is that there are millions in much worse shape than we are, much, much worse.
So if you switch your thinking in that direction you will accept your situation and deal with it the best you can to suit your lifestyle.
' By the way, I am 84 and still kicking (not with my feet anymore ) he, he.
Pace!

@cher27, You are singing my song. The universe seems to have set it's sights on me. My hearing and audio discrimination tests perfectly; however, I often can't hear my husband sitting three feet away because the tinnitus gets so loud.

Why would the jerk bring me back three times if he knows there is no treating it? That is just ... wrong. Really, really wrong.

I could handle the noise (I now sleep with headphones and meditation music all night to get my 3-4 hours' allotment.... My tinnitus comes with a lot of ear pressure and pain. Nothing shows on the MRI.

I think I've now achieved the unenviable status of having pain in every part of my body. Usually, simultaneously. And my husband wonders why I feel sad and negative all the time.

Constant pain wears down everything about a person. Pins and needles make things worse.
