Post kidney biopsy: AV fistula

In my understanding you may be scheduled for a Surgery to get this fixed, also how could this happen ... have doctors provided a reason ? Best Wishes.. hope you get this resolved.

Unfortunately, developing an AV fistula is a potential negative consequence of stabbing your kidney with a needle three times to get organ samples.
They warn you that this can happen, but it's supposed to be a low chance under modern ultrasound guidance.
I am going to call for a doctor consultation. Needless to say, I am very concerned.
I was just curious if anyone else was as unlucky as me to have this problem after a protocol kidney biopsy.

@l0lag0lag0b3 You are absolutely correct! I can't allow myself to get so down. I guess I am just showing some emotional fatigue from the transplant process, the CMV virus, the BK virus, etc. I will keep your positive words in my mind and heart ❤ THANK YOU!

@hello1234 I know we get advised of possible consequences of any procedure we are about to undergo. With my two [native] kidney biopsies, the first one in 2015, my nephrologist explained things very clearly, gave me his opinion, told me how many times he had seen complications, etc. Then just before actual procedure, the interventional surgeon repeated everything. I had no issues. In 2019 was a second biopsy on the other kidney, different facility/state. In that one, I had a nick done by the surgeon, causing additional bleeding. Additional external pressure by the surgical nurse that caused a bruised rib and high level of discomfort for many weeks.

Since then I have gone through both placement a peritoneal catheter for dialysis, and an AV fistula placement in right lower wrist area, also for dialysis. Yes, procedures were discussed in detail ahead of time, pros and cons. For me, the AV fistula has suffered complete shut down about 9 months after it was done, for no reason. The doctor cannot explain it, but I still have the aftereffects of half bloodflow to my fight hand, no blood pressure/lab pulls that arm, and diminished use of my arm.

As @101lag01lag0b3 said, we never know ahead of time what may happen, and I think we have fewer instances of complication when imaging is done and referred to. My husband has had 3 biopsies on his new kidney. All this said, I am sure you will be following up with your doctor as to what the next step may be, and how it will all play out.

hello @melly2010, Distinctly remember when we (my wife & I ) went to the initial orientation of donor & recipient session - remember an elderly person in upper 70s came for that session with his daughter (donor)
I don't know the outcome but the very fact that he & daughter got invited - my view if you have a donor and are in good condition health wise & it can established that the reciepient can withstand the surgical stress + you are a match.. I personally think it is possible.

My understanding is that 74 years old is not considered too old for a kidney transplant. (Most kidney transplant patients are over 65 years old).
Of course your Dad will need to go through the physical work up (cardiac stress test, blood and urine lab tests, lung xrays, abdominal CT, etc.) as part of the process. Is your father in pretty good health except for the kidney failure? Did your Dad start dialysis?

Yes my dad had started diaylus already and has one leg amputated and is a diabetic
