Irritated and itchy skin with no rash

Posted by 1953 @hopeful1953, Oct 20, 2022

Has anyone experienced itchy skin in one area that travels to another area in a line. I thought it might be shingles. There is great pain inside my body’s underarm. A swab sample was taken in the ER. The test turned out negative for shingles. This condition started about 3 week after my positive test for COVID. My Dr ordered a script for neurontin which has calmed the pain. I have had this condition for at least 5 weeks.

The anti itch cream from the drug store helps and for sensitive spots my MD has ordered betamethazone. It is a ream with cortisone in a mild amount. I do not use regular soap anymore. I use a form of cleanser that has a ream base and has stopped itching of my face and underarms. At least that is a help. Let me know if interested in what my dermatologist recommended.

Hey, yes I have been experiencing this.
Itchiness everywhere, particularly itchy on top of thighs, back, buttocks and biceps. I am not sleeping because of it, and it has also caused severe rash sparing the face of Petechiae, Purpura and demontitis. No allergy medication is working neither are oral steroids.

It is difficult to sort out if these symptoms are due to Covid or not. I am appreciating hearing from others and just getting some comparisons and ideas. I haven’t really found anything that helps with the itching. It seems so random as it skips around as you suggest. I try not to scratch or rub the area. Sometimes a cold cloth on the area helps. If not, I work to distract myself with an enjoyable activity. Best wishes to you.

Thank you for your message. I do also try cold and it gives some relief. I am afraid it is just another thing to learn to deal with on this road to recovery. I remain positive!! Hope you can, too.

Hi @mollymm. This very strange itch and rash seems to affect most post covid patients Ive communicated with. Since covid is different for all of us, this seems to present differently as well for each of us at different times, types, and areas. I started with large 1”round and 1” deep painful/itchy bumps on stomach, then small bumps on legs that oozed crystal like hard substance that radiated over weeks up whole body areas, then extreme hot red rash around neck with again large 1” round/deep bumps painful hip joint/ back of thighs/foot/ back/shoulder/ and neck throat area where the bumps actually protruded inward so far caused horrible gagging. Now ongoing upper chest and neck very itchy with sandlike granules and sometimes rash sometimes not with one crystal like small bump just appearing left under lip and on same left hip again. Very frustrating. Suspected multiforme erythema and dermatologist appt finally next week. Hopefully some helpful info from that I may share!

Hi @mollymm
It has been awhile since I have participated in this discussion. I feel compelled to participate again. My “itch” started shortly after my positive COVID test.
Unfortunately I continue with this very uncomfortable painful itch. I cannot claim a skin irritation because the area is invisible. I have been seen by 6 different doctors including ER visits, over the course of the last few months.
Besides the itch it can be extremely painful.
Neurontin is the drug my neurologist prescribed.
I take 100m in the morning and 300 only at night. I could increase the dose if necessary.
Like clockwork the itch and the pain returns in the evening. Though I try to spread out medication.
It has an effect on my balance so the end of the day it’s neurontin 300. Then this schedule starts up again the next day.
This itch prevented a normal life style. So now I can enjoy life again.
My neurologist has “charted” me as having an neurological itch. It took many month to convince anyone.
Having the opportunity to reach out and describe this condition has been a gift.
I do not feel so alone anymore.
Don’t give up. Maybe you’ll be sharing a solution to this condition.
I hope.
God Bless all who suffer from an invisible itch and all those whom can support us.

Thank you for being in touch. It saddens me to learn you are suffering from the itching too but I really appreciate your message. I am so pleased you have found a physician who understands and is helping you. This seems to be a mystery to many but having more of us speak up may help with future care. Keep taking care of yourself. Wishing you better days ahead .

I am so sorry to learn you are suffering too. When a condition is invisible it is often also not understood by others. I hope maybe some of the ideas in this Connect might help you.

Yes. Mostly on back, but other places too. The skin feels very dry likenits going to peel nor tear, but no visible evidence.

I feel compelled to ask if there was bloodwork done in the process of determining the source of this itchiness? I went for years to finally get a diagnosis of lichen sclerosis . No visible ra . I’ve read that lichen planus can also be invisible.
Most importantly my daughter was itching constantly and got a very unexpected diagnosis for celiac. Bloodwork was initially done for the obvious, diabetes or liver but both clear. Retested and was a severe celiac level . With the removal of gluten almost instantly no itch. I pray this may help someone.
