Phlegm in my throat and post nasal drip after Covid

Posted by danny2022 @danny2022, Dec 18, 2022

Ever since I had covid in January of 2022 I recovered from the virus but I was left with a constant phlegm in the back of my throat and post nasal drip that will not go away. The feeling of having mucus in the back of my throat actually gets worse when I try to get rid of it by coughing. I have been given steroid inhalers, albuterol, allergy medication, but none of these work. The mucus gets worse especially after I eat. I've never felt like this before and it all started after covid. Can anybody relate to what I am going through?

Mine seems to come from my throat also but my dr. said it all comes from the nose. I am doing nasal irrigation with NeilMed and I add some baby shampoo to it. Look it up. It's gaining traction as a possible treatment option. I quit taking Sudafed and Mucinex. They work somewhat but I don't want more meds.

I feel certain the phlegm comes from my throat. The phlegm, itself has a different consistency and even taste than nasal mucus. I happened to see my doctor when having a particularly bad day. After examining my throat with a lighted tube that went up my nose and down into my throat, he agreed that it was coming from my throat.
I think the symptoms from post Covid are just different from the usual conditions of the throat and nose from allergies, strep, colds,etc..

because all this thick phlegm always stays in my throat it really has messed up my sinuses to the point i do get the nasal drip down my throat, the weird thing is it builds in my throat after i eat or drink anything....so to help keep it from building in the sinuses i was prescribed "budesonide" that i use with my navage..it does help keep the nasal drip down. this stuff flushes out my sinus cavities so i can breath.. but i still can't figure out why the phlegm/mucus keeps building...i have alot of other symptoms to that come and go alot but if i could pick just one to go away...it would be the thick yuck in my throat!!!

Ok, thank you. Have you had relief? What did the dr. prescribe? Any sprays or medication?

I also have this after Covid. Always produce more after eating . It makes me nauseous. Have tried nasal rinses and also salt water gargle. They help somewhat, but if I quit doing them I am right back to nausea and coughing up phlegm. I have other issues but this one takes me out. Don’t want to eat and just want to go back to sleep so I don’t feel sick.

Hi Everyone! After trying different stuff I have reverted to what my MD recommends and that is a warm normal saline solution to rinse mouth and gargle x2 and to do this at least x3 a day. I do so in the morning before breakfast,. afternoon and evening and have a warm green tea to drink at evening. Have been doing this easy treatment for 5 days now and blowing my nose because it is runny---is not as much --so improving.
However when get up in morning, I have a lot of white sticky mucus that am till coughing up. I am learning how to control the coughing otherwise I throw up my breakfast and get the 'dry heaves'. Challenging situation, to be sure ! BUT AM NOT GIVING UP!! Hugs to All.

Did you get tested for silent reflux (LPR) already? Sounds like that could be it since mucus in your throat is one of the main symptoms. You could suffer from it without having the typical heartburn that comes with normal acid reflux.

I did when I had a esophogus test. They said no.
But I want to recheck

I,too, experience that same feeling and had my first panic attack because of it. Since then, I’ve had two more. My husband talks me down from it but I feel bad (mentally and of coarse physically) for quite some time afterwards. That closed up feeling is scary. I’m sorry to hear how many suffer with it. It’s just got to get better with time. Thinking of you!

My doctor didn’t prescribe anything much different than what we read from others such as Gargling with salt water, saline nose spray or mist, and mucinex to thin the phlegm. He also prescribed pantoprazole as I have symptoms of Gerd. The acid from Gerd can be irritating to throat which seems to make my phlegm issue worse so it helps me. However I only notice it helping when I stop taking it. Then I recognize that my symptoms flare so I assume , yes, it was helping.
I have not tried the zinc throat spray but I’m going to order it from Amazon tomorrow. It sounds promising. Have you used it?
