It is the genetic destiny of men, as they get older, to start to experience problems with their prostate. Half of men who have prostate problems, or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), will experience bothersome symptoms.
Active surveillance, oral medication, lasers or an electric loop that burn the prostate tissue from the inside out have been historic treatments for BPH. However, steam treatment has shown great promise and is changing the way BPH is treated.
Steam treatment is a convective water therapy that shrinks the prostate. The procedure can be performed in the doctor's office and has a low risk for complications and side effects.
Dr. Tobias Kohler, a urologist at Mayo Clinic, discusses steam treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Rezum should not be an "office procedure"; it is too painful and too invasive.
Update since my last post: I've been in tremendous pain and continued bleeding. Thought about going into ER but waited till this morning and called urologist's office. Luckily was able to get in for a quick consultation. I have a urinary tract infection and am now on Bactrim. This is after I was on Cipro for 7 days.

Terrible.....hoping you improve and especially the pain can be controlled.
Thank you for the well wishes. It's been almost 2 weeks since I had the procedure. I wish I could say that I'm a little bit better, but I'm not. Still bleeding from penis, still have tremendous pain when trying to urinate, still urinating less than a teaspoonful every 15 minutes, still getting up 7-8-9 times during the night. I decided to look for the results of the FDA phase 3 test on Rezum to see what side effects were found. It turns out that there is no safety, efficacy, or side effects listed. Rezum was approved as "medical equipment" by the FDA which only requires that the company prove it is safe (i.e. it is not going to kill you). I wish I knew when I would feel just a little bit better. That would, at least, give me some hope. I would pay anything to reverse the clock and not get this procedure.
Tough....feel helpless to offer some help. I think when men reach a certain age, medical kinda washes their hands of our concerns. Urology visits , seem to be "...how fast can we get rid of this guy and go to the next patient"...I did have the green light laser, and so far it seems to be good. Only complaint, is I seem to have to urinate every 20 minutes.....hopefully time makes the bladder stronger. Can you get a second opinion from another medical provider... surely there is some relief of some type...no one should be in such a position.
Thanks for your thoughts. I considered changing urologists or at least getting a second opinion, but my doctor is a board certified urologist, Harvard educated and head of the urology department at a major hospital in my city. So, I've decided to stick with him until I get through this. I went in again to see him yesterday (which was exactly 2 weeks since the Rezum procedure). Besides the Bactrim and Alfuzosin, I am now taking Oxybutinin, Myrbetriq, Uribel, and Prednisone. Seems like a lot of drugs, and I'm worried about side effects, especially regarding my kidneys. I "feel" a little better, but I'm still bleeding continuously, still have difficulty urinating, and still have a lot of pain when I do urinate. Even with all the drugs, last night I had to get up 8 times.
It's been 3 weeks and a day since I had the procedure. Still bleeding (constant drip of blood plus in urine) and I have developed incontinence. Pain is very much diminished. I never had a problem with incontinence, now I have an urge to urinate every 15 minutes. Just a few drops comes out each time. I get up 15 times each night. This is hell. I'm much worse after having the Rezum procedure than before. I would NOT recommend it to anyone.
I feel for your discomfort. I wrote a bit on Nov 15, 2021 somewhere on this site the pain associated with the procedure. IT Should not be an office procedure.
I had the Rezum procedure 5 months ago and all has not returned to pre-BPH times, but blood in my urine tapered to zero in a week. Get a different Urologist or at least a second opinion.
@peeman
I don’t know how long it takes to recover from this procedure or if you’re having complications or not.
However, doctors aren't Gods. They are capable of mistakes even Harvard-educated ones.
Sounds like you'll stick with him even though you're having doubts.
Second opinions are welcomed are encouraged by good doctors. Why don't you ask him if you should get one? Don't use his recommendation though.
Good luck,
Jake
