How did you manage the pain side effects of Prolia?

Posted by pine4234 @pine4234, Oct 26, 2018

I had prolia injection a week ago. I've developed lower back pain and severe spasms. The spasms are so bad I can hardly get out of bed or even out of a chair. Is there anything I can do or take to alleviate this awful pain.

Prolia prevents loss of bone by balancing the natural process of bone loss and re-building.

I understand Prolia slows or stops bone breakdown. Does it allow or inhibit the natural process of bone building?

I have never experienced side effects. However, when I began treatment 4 years ago, my judicial told me to make sure that I was well hydrated prior to the injection. Perhaps lack of adequate hydration could be an issue?? Have you approached your endocrinologist about these issues? I do hope this subsided for you.

Good evening @hsum4. I certainly respect your decision to return to Prolia after encountering pain with Evenity. You are aware, I hope, that Prolia does not build new bone. Evenity builds new bone..........

Please protect yourself from an unpredicted outcome.

Chris, do you know if ppl are required to take a relay drug after taking Evenity for 1 yr. I know that when one stops Prolia, one must take something such as alendronate for 2 yrs to prevent rebound fractures and I’m wondering if the same is true after stopping Evenity. Thank you.

I just had my 6th shot of Evenity, which I will receive 12 shots total. My physician had informed me that I would be taking something twice per year afterwards. He had mentioned Evenity but that was not for sure yet. Where I go to get the Evenity shot, the nurse had informed me that usually people get Prolia afterward. So, I know I will be taking something but not sure yet what that will be.

I had my second shot of Prolia eight days ago. Side affects started faster this time. Muscle, bone and joint pain are slowly escalating. This time I’ve got a few hives. Don’t know if they will get worse yet. I’m just keeping an eye on everything. Back pain is worse in the morning but I’ve managed to get it to a minimum throughout the day by moving around at least every hour. Doing light housework and cooking keeps me busy. I’m trying not to focus to much but it’s hard when you hurt. Tylenol is all I’m taking. Yet when I need to be more functional I admit I will take up to six a day. I’m sure that isn’t a good thing but it helps a little.
I wonder why some medication for pain cannot be invented that is not habit forming? That last injection of Prolia side affects continued for at least four and a half months.

I’m amazed some don’t have pain with Prolia. The pain in my joints and bones is awful. I wonder why mine is so bad? Am I doing something wrong? Tylenol only helps a little bit. Two o’clock this morning I awoke with shooting pains in my jaw and ear. How do people function on this drug?

I had a lot of back and joint pain after taking Evenity. I'm back on Prolia and the pain is just as severe or worse than before. I also take Tylenol and it helps a little. I just wonder about all the side effects of any of the bone drugs.

I hope the doctors know just what they are putting their patients through.

Good evening @nhorn, I am checking on members in this group to make sure that everyone knows that Prolia does not build new bone. It protects bone that is already there. These are really tough decisions. I am 80 years old now and have had quite a struggle. Please know you have my concern and best wishes.

Yes, I was aware of what Prolia does, but Evenity that builds bone gave me more joint pain then the Prolia. I'm back on Prolia.

@fearfracture, Good evening. Thanks for your reply. Although I am not a medical professional in any way........I do not have a response to your question about stopping Evenity. However, I understand the issue. Have I already given you the number for Amgen? Both Prolia and Evenity are their products. If you have questions about EVENITY® and would like to speak to a call center representative, please call 1-888-231-5663.

Please send a reply post so everyone will know the answer.

Thank you for your response. I don't know if we are speaking the same language. My knowledge of how Prolia works does not include building new bone.

From the headline on website, I copied this introduction.
"Prolia® is an injection that works with your body to help stop the development of bone-removing cells."

Unless I am reading this comment incorrectly, Prolia does not create new bone. Interpreted as stated, it implies that Prolia helps prevent the development of cells that reduce bone.

While I am not here as a mentor to disagree with you as a member, I do feel that I must support the information that has been given to me to share with other members.

May you be free and protected from inner and outer harm.
