Anyone else experience Weight Gain with long COVID?

Posted by RMS @rinadbq, Oct 8, 2021

I have had ~30 pound weight gain since November 2020 when I initially had COVID. It seems disproportionate to my calorie intake. Any one else with this?

Have your thyroid checked not test 1 but ask for test 2 my hubby found out he now has thyroid disease and must get blood work for the rest of his life ! He’s a long hauler too! My hair started falling out too!! Many people have ended up in psych wards because of it !!
You are not alone !

@cheryl12 my endocrinologist -- the top one in Dallas -- told me that any thyroid test done within ~120 days of covid was probably not a reliable measure of what we really going on with my thyroid (i've had thyroid disease for more than 20 years)...

If your husband's findings are based on a test within that window, you might seek a second opinion

What irritates me the most is, that as a fat person, all the doctors see is a fat person. They don't see that I'd lost almost 100 pounds prior to COVID, and that I'd gained back 30-35 of it since I had COVID in May. All I get is another d**n "lose weight" lecture. Well, I eat keto, and have since January of 2020. I would be having a lot more fun if I gained 35 pounds in 8 months!

Yes, I had a 40 pound weight gain unrelated to diet. I was also diagnosed with lymphedema in my legs from my feet and ankles to my knees a month and a half after testing positive for Covid.

Thank you for posting! I did Noom and lost 35 pounds over 9 months. Got COVID June 2022 and have now gone up 20lbs. I know it’s inflammation because I’m puffy in my face and belly area. My measurements have barely changed and I’m being so careful with calories. Did dry January and no change. I also know it’s water because my weight will change 1-3lbs either way overnight. I’m feeling like a failure. I did a LOW dose diuretic for 2 weeks and I do think it helped but my doc isn’t comfortable prescribing higher or longer time frame. I wish they could figure this issue out since so many of us are battling it. I was feeling so crazy until I found this blog!

My son is keeping his weight in check with diuretics, but a cardiologist friend suggested he have a complete cardio work up because any virus, especially Covid, can cause damage. I can't push him but hope he pursues the topic at his next doctors visit. I think the dr. Just wanted to get him stabilized first. On another note, I'm noticing the majority of the long Covid symptoms are coming from people who were hit in the early Covid outbreak spring 2020!

Glad he found something. I’m seeing my doc in 2 weeks for the same thing. I’m hope he gets the all clear! Cardiac issues are so scary!

I can understand your feelings! Weight loss—weight gain, so frustrating . It sounds like you had a good experience with Noom . Can you share a little about it? 35 pounds is a lot of weight. What about Noom helped you the most? You certainly aren’t a failure!

I can’t tell you how much this reply means to me! The greatest thing Noom has given me was teaching me to be mindful of my behaviors surrounding food and the choices I make. It taught me to be aware of what and why I was making the food decisions I was. It has been very educational!
