Phage therapy update

UCSD is doing the most work and research on phages.
Here is a very informative interview with their top phage doctor (Dr. Saima Alma) and the results they are seeing. They are using IV, nebulizing, and oral phage therapy. Takes a while to get in as a patient — hoops to jump through.

@ale3300

Hi I have been trying to get an appointment with them to begin treatment. Have you had any luck going this?

Is this treatment an option for Bronchiectasis with Pseudomonas? Or just for those with CF? Is this an inpatient treatment or outpatient? Would love to know more. Thank you!

Hello Irene, As you can see from Linda's (@becleartoday) posts, this Phage treatment is being offered in Tlibisi, Georgia in Europe.
In addition to the link she provided to one of the clinics, here is the link to a published paper describing three patients and the illnesses they are treating, their specific results and descriptions of the currently fluid nature of the process.

To find the information about pseudomonas specifically, search the article for the term. You can do this by pressing <Ctrl><F> and a search box will pop up. Type in pseudomonas to find what you are looking for.

I would say this is an emerging, very promising therapy. There is a lot of research and testing underway, & I hope it will soon include those in our group.

Thank you Sue. I feel so dumb because i thought this was in GA in the USA. But does UCSD offer some sort of treatment or did i misunderstand that also. There was an email provided for applying to some sort of treatment and i thought that was UCSD. Again i may have this all wrong. It sounds like this is not available in the USA and the trials going on involve CF patients only. It does sound promising but too far in the future for many of us.

Here is a fascinating story on how an infectious disease doctor at UCSD with stunning tenacity and courage saved her husband from dying by experimental use of phages there. How she finally found and matched a phage to this bacteria correctly is amazing.
I was recently hospitalized twice with this same bacteria (Acinetobacter Baumanni) and dr. Strathdee was kind enough to connect me to the phage therapists — thankfully after five different antibiotics we were finally able to clear me of the AB so I didn’t need to go to UCSD.
