What did you do to help radiation burn?

Posted by cadunkin @cadunkin, Oct 24, 2022

After lumpectomy & lymph node removal (margins & nodes showed no cancer) I had 15 rounds or radiation in 3 weeks. At the end of treatment two weeks ago I developed a rash on my chest from the radiation. It’s very red & itches like crazy, which makes it hard to sleep. I’m using over the counter cortisone cream & Aquaphor for the dryness. Has anyone had success with other ways to treat this while waiting for it to heal? This site has helped me tremendously so thank you to everyone!

My doc subscribed Silverdine (?) which is a silver and sulfur ointment, it's helped tremendously! I also put a telfa (non-stick) pad under my breast where it broke out in blisters. It looks angry red, but the blisters are healing up.

The silver sulfadiazine 1% works VERY well! My son was in a motorcycle accident and had some nasty burns. He had some SSD ointment and gave it to me, told me to try it when I was having issues from radiation therapy for breast cancer. It worked wonders!

My sister got me a cream sold on Amazon called radiation relief cream which gets a lot of good reviews. I asked the hospital if I could use it and they said yes so I am giving it a try. I also am using aquaphor but it leaves a layer that’s hard to shower off without washing repeatedly and I don’t want to irritate the area further. Has anyone used the Radiation burn relief cream from ultimate vitality? It is supposed to have been developed by an oncology nurse and is all natural (well mostly).

I used many of the creams mentioned during radiation assiduously but after 6 weeks of radiation, got very bad burns. The nurse gave me a big supply of Covidien Xeroform Petrolatum Dressing, 5 by 9 inches, which worked wonders but is horribly expensive (almost $ a piece). Fortunately, each time I went in to have the burns checked, the gave me lots more. I initially needed 6 a day, but slowly less and less. After 4 weeks the burn scabs are all gone and I'm using Calendula, Miaderm, and Vaniecream to help with the discoloration and to keep the skin soft. Hope this is useful.

Miaderm, and Miaderm with lidocaine immediatly after the treatment in the changinging room.

My radiologist recommended Lily of the Desert Aloe Vera Gelly. I used it regularly and had no problems other than what looked like a mild sunburn. I do not have sensitive skin, however, so that helped.

I was given Aquaphor which helped greatly and kept my skin moist and comfortable

The nurse recommended Aquaphor and I used it after every treatment. It helped tremendously! Just messy, so I wore an of cotton t-shirt under my clothes.

Vanicream three times a day was suggested to me, but I had a hard time remembering to apply it so often. Instead I used a thin coat of Soothe Sensitive Skin Treatment from Rodan+Fields once a day. (Most days; sometimes I forgot.)
I didn’t burn at all.
