Which is better for neuropathy foot pain DRG or Nevro HFX?

Posted by dbaps @dbaps, Jan 2, 2023

I do not have any back or leg pain. I have idiopathic peripheral neuropathy foot pain. Which do you think is better for this type of pain, DRG or Nevro HFX?

I'm on a 12mcg fentanyl patch for pain in the bottoms of both feet. My doctor wants me to try the Nevro HFX SCS. I would like to know my chances for being able to no longer need fentanyl if I get the Nevro HFX SCS?

@dbaps, welcome. I moved your questions about the effectiveness of a spinal cord stimulator for neuropathic pain, especially in the feet to the Neuropathy support group.

@jimhd @lorirenee1 @martyk can share their experiences. In the meantime, you might be interested in these related discussions:

The spine surgeon from Columbia Presbyterian in New York who implanted my Boston Scientific nerve stimulator indicated that it would not treat peripheral neuropathy but should be effective for nerve pain. In my case, I also have a Morton's neuroma. I have not found it to be particularly effective for either condition

I have been reading about it and hope it may be an option option for me. I have been dealing with Pudendal nerve pain and so far pain blocks or Gabapentin have not helped. To the contrary, I am dealing with more and more pain. I am seeing a pain doctor at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville and dorsal root ganglion nerve stimulation has not been discussed.
Any suggestions how to go about this?

Sorry, I have no info on the dorsal root ganglion, but I am a long time sufferer from pudendal nerve pain.
Maybe I should ask my doc about it?
How I have been dealing with the pain—pelvic pt, they probably will do internal work, teach you how to do it yourself (with appliances?) they can recommend, (it’s not hard)
And pt to help put everything in place, or stretch, strengthen or loosen things.
I also use a tens unit in different places, and Diclofenac patches (RX) , also in different places. Spine, buttocks etc. Ice, heat, trying to stay away from oral stuff, as I think that may have caused some digestive issues, adding to all the mess.
The only oral meds I take occasionally, that seem to help, both RX, are methocarbamol or Librax. From my urologist who has helped immensely.
Please follow up with any information that you find out…thanks and good luck!!!

Thank you so much for your reply. I am sorry you have been suffering from pudendal nerve pain. It certainly can interfere with one’s life! I’ve been dealing with it for several years, along with peripheral and small fiber neuropathy, without much real success in pain relief. Have tried multiple treatments, but some of the things you mentioned are new to me, so I appreciate that. I’ve seen 2 different pelvic pts over the last three years, 2 neurologists, and 2 pain docs. The DRG only recently came to my attention, so I exploring its effectiveness. I will pass along anything substantial that I learn. I am curious about how to use the TENS unit for pudendal pain relief. Thanks again.

I would be interested in your doctor’s perspective. I just had a pudendal nerve block done at Mayo in Phoenix. I plan to ask him about the DRG stimulation. It’s new to me.

Yes, please share all info you get…and your experiences!
Tens unit might be something to have pelvic pt help you get the right settings. when I get home will send pics of one I have and the settings. As to where to place pads, I find that on either side of sacrum area or lower, or on butt as close as you can get to inside of thigh on/near/inside sits bones. Play with locations on a low setting to see if it feels ok. Just wear something with pockets that you can thread wire up clothes and into unit in pocket. Have pockets and batteries will travel!!!

Have to use 2 or 4 pads, and if you use 4 you may want to criss cross them
