C. difficile – Are your guts ever normal again?

Posted by sue6408 @sue6408, Jan 27, 2019

Does anyone know any body that has recovered from c.diff (guts back to pre-c.diff status ) . I have been negative for a year and still have bloating every time I eat anything and sporadic diarrhea. I need maternity clothing to eat and be comfortable. I have 0 appetite since I was initially infected.I am on creon 36,000 . this helps some what with bloating,I take papya&pineapple enzymes not helping, and floraster 2xday not sure about that.I have tried the FODMAP diet, I avoid many foods on that diet. I am seeing an RD, just finished an elimination diet with her. If I eat I bloat there for I am. Bottom line...are my guts ruined forever ?

@ngorman25 I see. I don't blame you for not stopping your Probiotics! Stick with what works! I wish you continued good, improving health! And I thank you so much for sharing you FMT Colonoscopy experience with me. Very helpful. I may think of another question or two later if you don't mind. Thanks again!

@pixie1960 Ask me anything at all! Let me know when you are scheduled. Keep me posted! I wish you all the best! You know, when I first got cdiff, I and my family had never heard of it. I felt very fortunate to find this group. I think it saved my sanity! I got valuable information here and spoke with a lot of people going through the same thing. Very helpful. I hope you do ok. Take care..

@ngorman25 I certainly will let you know when I'm scheduled and keep you posted. I understand what you mean. My Family has the best of intentions but have no clue what C-diff is. I thank you so much for showing interest in my health issue. I feel encouraged that I really CAN get better and hopefully live a normal life again. This disease gets really debilitating. Thank you for your time and understanding!!

My GI doctor is sending me to get a C scan tomorrow because so far no one has diagnosed what I have. I have many of the same problems a lot of you have mentioned.
I spent 6 days in the hospital back in April with no help.
I feel terrible all the time. I have lost over 40 pounds. I wish someone could help.

I certainly pray for you to be healed and get an answer that would be helpful to you. These symptoms/problems get to be about more than a person can deal with. Let us know what you find out. God bless and heal you.

@pixie1960 That is great news! I wish you the very best outcome. I will be eagerly waiting to hear from you. Will this be your first colonoscopy? Cause if it is, the prep is miserable.

ngorman25 Thank you for the Reply and well wishes! No, it will be my 3rd Colonoscopy, so I know whereof you speak in regards to the dreaded Prep. It's been a while, but as I recall it was the worst part of the whole thing.

QUESTION: ANYONE DEVELOPED C-DIFF FROM ANTIBIOTIC BACTRIM???
I had C-diff some 12 years ago from Amoxicillin given to my by my dentist. On the tenth day of antibiotics, I got a terrible diarrhea - like a colonoscopy prep. I was so weak I could ot drive. I ended up in the hospital for a week because I was so dehydrated. When discharged my GI prescribed Vancomycin in compound form (which is cheaper) for ten days. I never had another reoccurrence. I went back to a normal life!
However, I have stayed away from antibiotics and prominently put in my clinical information to not give them to me because I had C-diff.
Now I just had lung surgery and have developed a seromo from surgery (a collection of clear fluid or serum that builds up in a cavity under the skin). The surgeon said take an antibiotic in case there is an infectious component. I reminded them that I had had C-diff- so they prescribed Bactrim which has a low risk for causing C-diff. I have five more days and am really nervous!
I have searched but have never found the answer. Once one is over C-diff and tests negative, and years go by, what is the risk to take another antibiotic?

I'm sorry to hear about your surgery and subsequent problem. I had Bronchitis recently and my Family Dr gave me a couple of Rocephin Injections. I was hospitalized in late 2020 for 16 days with Cdiff, which I contracted from Clindamycin a Dentist gave me about a month before. So I too have avoided Abx like the plague until the Bronchitis episode recently. I called my Infectious Disease Dr who treated me in Hospital in 2020 about taking these 2 injections. He immediately put me on Vancomycin-125mg-2 Daily- for the course of the Abx, plus 7 more days. You may wish to mention this to your Surgeon. As I understood it the Vancomycin stays in your gut as a Prophylaxis to lessen the possibility of getting Cdiff again. I am about 2 weeks through the Vanco course and so far so good.
I know Bactrim is one of the lower risk Abx for Cdiff. But i dont think it would hurt to mention this to your Surgeon. I wish you all the best!
