Fluctuating blood pressure

Posted by ih60 @ih60, Dec 18, 2022

Hello, I’m fairly new to Mayo Connect and just joined this group today. I had an episode 2 days ago of a sudden spike in blood pressure - 200/110. Went to ER and my BP stayed up for a number of hours. They gave me two pills to gradually reduce the BP and sent me home with a prescription. The next morning when I measured my BP, it was back to normal - actually lower than 120/80. At one point it was 94/62, but most of the day it stayed around 113/68. So I didn’t take the meds, scared that it would bring my BP too low. What can cause this fluctuation and should I be worried about stroke? Thanks.

ih60,

What meds did you take and what dosage?

So, you stopped taking the meds without notifying your doctor? Were you told this was safe?

The doctor prescribed Norvasc. He told me if my blood pressure comes down to normal range or lower, do not take the med. I filled the prescription, but the next day my blood pressure was up and down but mostly within the normal range. The lowest I measured was 94/61. I was afraid if I took the med, my BP could fall dangerously low. I went back to the hospital after I had another spike. The attending doctor said she was glad I didn’t take the med because I have “Labile” hypertension. I’m not sure what to think.
