What does my Gastrin levels mean?

Posted by eileenb1022 @eileenb1022, Dec 10, 2022

I got my results of my gastrin level yesterday. it was 152. it looked like it should be under 100 if im not mistaken. when i got the result on the portal there was no notes. so i sent a message asking and saying i was rather nervous. took about 4-5 hours before i got a response the nurse just said "did you fast" and i said yes i did cause the dr wanted me to fast to get a accurate read. now its the weekend and im a wreck. to back up ,my former GI did a endoscope last june said "linear endrocine cell with possibly autoimmune gastritis" he never did the antibody bloodwork i just got all the other bloodwork recently done. when i saw this new GI a month ago he said the antibody bloodwork was normal he doubt i had autoimmune gastritis but he schedled another endoscope for the end of april. he ordered the gastrin cause he said that was the only test that wasnt done i didnt think much of it i assumed it would be normal like he said all my others were. now im kinda stressed about it especiallly since they didnt respond and now its the weekend. i did just have a 24 hr ph test cause the GI suspected gerd/ silent reflux. i dont know if that could have anything to do with it. i havent been having stomach pains just cant eat/digest certain food but i had my gallbladder out almost a year ago. any feedback would mean so much im so anxious!cthank you!

Here’s some information about gastrin levels from Mayo Clinic:
"While elevated gastrin may indicate tumors in your pancreas or duodenum, it also can be caused by other conditions. For example, gastrin may also be elevated if your stomach isn't making acid, or you're taking acid-reducing medications, such as proton pump inhibitors. Because gastrin levels can fluctuate, this test may be repeated a few times.” https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/zollinger-ellison-syndrome/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20379046

Eileen, I can understand why you are stressed, especially as you got this information just as the weekend was beginning. Do you take a PPI (proton pump inhibitor)?

Hi Colleen,
Thank you for the response and information. It's hard though reading it could be this or that. Just makes my anxiety worse. But no I take no ppis, no antacids. I got the results late morning on Friday. I immediately messaged them cause I was nervous as it seemed high I didn't get a response till almost 430 the nurse asked if I fasted I responded yes I did and I didn't hear back. So I assume I'll have to wait until Monday at least I just don't understand they didn't reach out all day on Friday if it is elevated. It doesn't really give me a good feeling

Eileen, it's important that you focus on your health and wellbeing now. What helps you to relax or distract?

My computer or certain TV shows and my husband and son. I was just talking to someone in my b12 deficentcy group on Facebook she is the second that said elevated gastrin levels usually mean precious anemia been talking to someone that has it having second thoughts about this gi I waited so long to see he is against b12 Injections and that's what I need now precipitous anemia you need b12 Injections for life so be interesting what they will say toe when they call back. You'd think they would have been more concerned. I had to wait 2 weeks for a response about my concern over my bloodwork my husband had to call. I gave them leeway for the Thanksgiving holiday no I have doubts over everything about him he said all my other antibody bloodwork was normal but was it? I see new pcp next week mYbe I should go over it with him this gi said endoscope every 5 yrs I thought that was too long this person I talked to said every 3 yrs due to the small chance of gastric cancer. I dint like having these doubts again he is my 3rd gi

Hello @eileenb1022,

I agree with Colleen's, @colleenyoung, comments that your worry is understandable, however, until you get a more definitive answer and/or diagnosis, it might be a good idea to try to relax, plan on doing things that will allow you to rest from thinking about your gastrin levels.

I've had three surgeries for a rare type of cancer in the duodenal bulb, however, my gastrin levels were not all that high. In order to diagnose a serious gastric disorder, such as cancer, or pernicious anemia, many other tests need to be done. If you try to put a lot of emphasis on one test result you can create a lot of unnecessary worry and anxiety.

I would encourage you to consider looking for answers and talking with your medical team, but also give yourself a break from worry. I know that this is easier said than done, but it is important for your overall health to take time to relax.

Physical exercise will help you to put your worries in perspective while you wait for answers and a diagnosis. Are there any forms of physical exercise that you enjoy? I'm thinking of taking walks, practicing yoga or Tai Chi with a YouTube video?

so your saying high gastrin may be cancer? i had 3 caring people in my b12 group say percious anemia. are you saying 153 is not all that high? well i got a message from this GI last night and i really feel his tone was uncalled for saying how much time he spent with me and my issues were not "medically urgent" my gastrin level was mild and not of concern of and my focus needs to be on my mental health and my weight. oh yes my weight thats why the quack referred me to the weight center and kept saying "surgery" umm, i dont think so im not having with all my other issues having weight loss surgery. i have his message i have my lab work lab work he is irritated with me about he said i needed to forget my lab work sure ill forget how dangerously low my iron and ferritan and b12 is ill forget how i want to collapse how i dont have the attention for anything but sleeping. diagnosos it aint gonna come from him im already upset. you just made it worse goodbye
