Conflicting advice on exercise

Posted by sheilad1 @sheilad1, Dec 9, 2022

I was told exercise must be weight bearing and impact like walking dancing and marching in place. This says weight bearing but easy on the impact.

Is weight bearing but not impact ok? My knees would appreciate that.

@sheilad1, Thanks for starting this discussion. I think it's a great question and something to be aware of before starting an exercise program for bone health. Here's some information I found on the question.

"High-impact weight-bearing exercises help build bones and keep them strong. If you have broken a bone due to osteoporosis or are at risk of breaking a bone, you may need to avoid high-impact exercises. If you’re not sure, you should check with your healthcare provider."

Was it your doctor or healthcare provider that told you it has to be weight bearing and high impact or low impact?

I use a Teeter FreeStep Cross Trainer which helps me get in my daily exercise. I used to have an elliptical and liked it also.

Do you think the elliptical is as helpful as the teeter?

I just checked out the Teeter. You’re seated on that so it isn’t weight bearing.

You're right, it's not weight bearing but it works out more muscle groups than the stand up elliptical that I used to have. I still need to get out and walk when the weather is better but it's a little harder for me due to lower back issues which is why I like the Teeter.

But if it’s not weight bearing it won’t help the osteoporosis

Maybe not but it helps the muscles that are connected to the bones. I still try to walk more and do some minor hand/arm weight bearing exercises that I don't like. Ugh...have to go out and shovel the snow and it's definitely heavy and wet today - definitely will get my weight bearing exercises in today 🙁.
