Charlie Horses and Cramping: What helps?

Posted by sickteacher @sickteacher, Nov 8, 2022

Hello! I have been experiencing tremendously painful Charlie Horses / cramps in my feet, legs and even abdomen if I bend over. I don’t even know what doctor to go to for this issue, as I have seen so many specialists for other long Covid and have just heard the typical “drink more water and eat bananas type advice.” I just woke up screaming with one in my calf and woke up my entire family. Any advice of what type of doctor to go to or how else to help would be greatly appreciated!

For the abdominal cramps, a physical therapist taught me to stretch my upper torso by standing with my back against the wall and raising my arms overhead against the wall.

Leg cramping is common.--not just after covid.
Consult your family doctor or naturopath.
Treatment is to take magnesium every evening.
Also helps to eat a banana day for potassium and magnesium.

In addition to magnesium supplements, it helps to soak in an Epsom salt bath regularly.

I tried cymbalta 30 mg once a day for this and almost immediately went away. I had the worst leg pains and cramping I couldn’t even walk. I came across an article on repurposing meds for long covid and that was one of them. I’ve been on it for 4 months and I’m glad it works. I stopped it for a few days to see if it’s actually the medicine helping and sure enough my pain came back and I went right back o. And within a day I was all good!

Believe it or not but drinking pickle juice can help Charlie horses and muscle cramps. Also adding a magnesium supplement can help

Stretching, slowly and often seems to provide me some relief. I used to mindlessly stretch, and too far before and it made it worse. It felt like my muscles were being twisted. Stretching needs to be slow and controlled. I hope you can get relief as well.

Theraworx’s
It is the greatest. It will spray on your feet your legs and the cramping goes away within minutes. It’s the only thing that has helped me.

I posted on another thread about my 17 month saga & finally being diagnosed with Long-Haul Covid (only had it in the gut).

I too have severe leg pains & abdominal cramping. I had an ultrasound on my legs Friday & will hopefully have results back tmo or Tues. All the tech could say is that I don’t have blood clots.

Because I’ve been dealing with Long-Haul for 17 months (& misdiagnosed for past 16 months)…I’m pretty confident that the cramping & leg pains are associated with Covid residual toxins or whatever…

I’ll post a follow-up once I find out more. I’m now seeing an MD who is specializing in Long-Haul symptoms…

Here’s my latest. I had a Doppler scan done on my legs last week…no blood clots & no venous issues so that was ruled out…

This same Covid DR I’m seeing had recommended I get a hydrotherapy colonics which I did 3 days ago…I’ve never had one before…

This ND said that my intestines were severely dehydrated & kept soaking up water…By the end of the session, she said that I was now hydrated.

Amazing…the leg pains & cramping (that I’ve had for the past 12 weeks) have mostly gone away!!!

There’s so much damage (permanent or not) that Long-Haul could be causing!

I also had one IV of nutrients last week including magnesium, etc. The pain & cramping did not go away after it but I’m sure it will certainly help too.

This is truly a trial & error saga for all of us. Maybe the treatment above wouldn’t work for your particular situation but with me…after a 17 month saga & only in my GI tract…it kind of makes sense that my GI tract was screaming for help!

I’m so thankful that I found an MD last month who better understands Long-Haul after suffering then for 16 months! Maybe this 17th month is the beginning of a new day!
