@martin300 Hello, and welcome to Mayo Connect. I am sure there is someone here who will be able to reply if we have a little more information. Diagnosis and Treatment of Hyperthyroidism trues to get to the root cause, then a plan can be made.
Sometimes, there is a correctible underlying cause, or some other health condition is causing the problem. When it is corrected, the thyroid may re-regulate itself...
What led to your diagnosis, and are you seeing an endocrinologist?

I was first diagnosed with Hashimoto’s and had hypo thyroid. Within a year I was diagnosed with Graves and got hyper thyroid. I was on And anti-thyroid medication for 18 months and did it correct itself. I went in to my endocrinologist every three months for bloodwork as he said that most commonly re-lapses happen within two years. Three years later my graves went active again. And I’m back on Methimazole 5ml 1x day. I have also made dietary changes to help with side effects and find being gluten free has been a game changer. I had terrible brain fog, fatigue, joint muscle pain. My symptoms are 90% better with diet change. I recently went on vacation and for two months after fried sugar and all things gluten back into my diet. In those terrible symptoms all came back.

Hello,
I have just been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. Im convinced things like this can be improved with food. Are you suggesting GF and generally just clean eating? I would be keen to hear from anyone who had recommendations.

@hannae welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism/ Graves Disease about 20 years ago. The treatment at that time was Methimazole medication. The endocrinologist who diagnosed it and prescribed the medication also told me that it is common for the condition to flip overtime to Hypothyroidism. I’m no longer on the medication and I’m symptom free. My doctor continues to monitor labs and they are normal. Nothing was ever said about eating in regards to the Hyperthyroidism but I was already following particular dietary guidelines for diabetes and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Things can get a little complicated when there are more than one condition to consider. But since thyroid has to do with metabolism it only makes sense that there would be some useful dietary information to learn about. Could you ask your provider for a referral to a dietician (someone who has experience working with thyroid conditions)?
Thank you for your reply. I have noticed a few mentions of lowering iodine foods and possibly trying GF. In general I am a healthy fit person and only in my 20s so this has all come as a shock. In general, how long do people stay on medication? Im thinking about my future as hoping to get pregnant again in next few years.

I am not sure but have you discussed the digestive tracts absorption being an issue??? Quite often there are multiple autoimmune issues. Specific issues in your gut may jack around with the absorption of medicines and food.

Yes seeing a specialist. I’m looking for info on side effects to the Radion pills. I have to have a ultrasound of my thyroid and an uptake.

1 ReactionAn antigen test would tell much more yet they don’t do them unless you ask and the test can change everything
