How do I file a complaint against a provider of psychiatric services? I live in MN and have been unable to get a refill because the refill request answering machine at my psychiatrist's clinic has been too full to take any more messages. They are responsible for other issues as well. I an currently going through venlafaxine withdrawals again thanks to them.

Welcome @benjit, I know it's frustrating when trying to use the system that is setup to make it easier for refills and then to have it not working. Do they have a separate office number that you can call to let them know the prescription refill number is not working?

Your pharmacist can give you an emergency supply. Not a whole script but enough to get you by. Call the pharmacy and explain. Have them call your doctor and put in a request for refill.

Unless you have another provider who you can transfer care to I’d be cautious before you file a complaint. You can always consider going to a hospital emergency room where a psychiatrist would be available if needed and/or the ED doc could write you a prescription too in an emergency. There are always crisis centers too that can assist you. You do not need to put yourself thru this agony. Also, try and get your medications on automatic refill so you don’t run into these situations again. Our current prescribing system works more efficiently when the pharmacy contact the doctors office directly. One last question, does your doctor have email that you can reach them with?

There is patient advocacy for every field of medicine from hospital staff to private. There are boards for them as well. Listening to a patient and taking steps to investigate is part of their responsibility. You are not alone.
