Neuropathy: Anyone have any experience with gabapentin?

Posted by sjhedcon @sjhedcon, Mar 21, 2020

I have loss of feeling in my feet and tingling sensation. My doctor prescribed gabapentin. I read the side effects and decided not to take this med.
Anyone have any experience with gabapentin?

Hello @sjhedcon, Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. There is a another discussion that is similar to yours where you can meet other members discussing Gabapentin. You may also be interested in this discussion here:

Are you able to share a little more about your symptoms and your diagnosis? Have you been diagnosed with neuropathy? I have been diagnosed with idiopathic small fiber peripheral neuropathy. I shared my story earlier on Connect here: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/anyone-here-dealing-with-peripheral-neuropathy/?pg=42#comment-65985

@rpenn, I haven't seen one specific in the neuropathy group for Igm but I think these might be similar in the Neuropathy group:

-- TS-HDS Antibody and Small Fiber Neuropathy:

-- FGFR3 ANTIBODY:
https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/fgfr3-antibody/
This one is in the Autoimmune group:
-- Low levels of IgG IgA IgM:

Sorry to hear your neuropathy was caused by Cipro. My idiopathic SFPN started more than 20+ years ago and when I finally did get the diagnosis, my neurologist thought it could be hereditary. After doing some research I thought it might possibly have been caused by a statin I took for many years for other issues before my diagnosis and meds changed when my blood pressure diagnosis changed to primary aldosteronism. Then I listened to an 80+ year old neurologist at one of meetings for the Minnesota Neuropathy Association who cheerfully told us that if you live long enough you will get neuropathy as nerve cells eventually die.

Yes ive heard that.
But my notes I made after 10 days of Cipro I’m complaining about the calves in my legs and all my symptoms just kept getting worse so I know it’s a cipro

I’m weaning myself off gabapentin from the 900 mg 3 times per day= (2700 mg) per 24 hrs.
I’m down now to 6 per day and going to start dropping one 300 per day taking it down to 1800 mg per day.
It takes a long time to take the dosage down so it should be sometime in Feb by the time I’m off totally.
In place of gabapentin I found compression socks which work beautifully in taking the pain and pins and needles away.

My neuropathy was caused by long-term use of the anti-seizure medications Dilantin and Phenobarbital. I’ve had neuropathy for over 30 years.
Now that I am in stage four and the nerves are so damaged I no longer have the painful sensations normally associated with neuropathy. I have numbness from my feet to my waist, along with new or worsening symptoms.

Oh yes! I'm using compression knee highs,or ankle compression, definitely help.
Do you think I can wear one all night? Never tried it, only days or when going for a walk.
Thank you!

I tried wearing mine right away overnight. The pain decreased to a tolerable level grabbed a fresh pair and wore them all day and again all night. I found that the elastic did leave marks around my ankles but did not cut off the circulation. I’ve decided to take my socks off at night, they pain starts right away but then stops and I find sleep. Takes about 15 minutes. Your socks may help you overnight , I’d try it , if you start to feel uncomfortable take them off.
I’ve been reborn this year taking Jesus and god into my heart giving my heart and soul to Jesus. We have the power within thanks to Jesus who died for our sins , came back to life and washed away all of our sins. The power has been given to us to heal ourselves and others. Repent for your sins and give yourself to Jesus who will take you into his flock and give you the power to heal yourself.
Pray for miracles they happen. I never believed but I do now. I have seen miracles happen in our ministry because of Jesus.
It always seems we turn to god when there’s nothing left. Jesus understands and accepts , he does not judge, he just wants you to be happy, healthy and enjoy the life that was taken away from us in the Garden.
So I’ll leave you with this,
Thankyou Holy Spirit for doing your work. Jesus , Thankyou for bringing this person into my life. In your name Jesus, please take this person into your flock and show them that they have the power to heal themselves …and others. God bless you

Jake ….I feel your pain and how you feel. I won’t let my illness go any further.
I’ve tried everything and only until Aug of this year did I get with god(reborn) asking Jesus for healing of my affliction.
I used god and Jesus as a last resort when I should have offered my heart and soul initially to him. We have the power to heal ourselves in the name of Jesus who died for our sins so we could have the power.
Following the word, confession of sins and giving your heart to Jesus you will be given the power we’ve always had but was hidden from us by the devil.
Jake I’m no bible thumper but I just want to plant the seed of Jesus that you know he will help you to heal , you just have to ask for his help. Satan will run and you will find that your healing will start right away.

God bless you and believe he will complete your healing in the name of Jesus, I cast out satan and have Jesus enter your heart.
If you’ve tried everything Jesus does not judge but offers salvation.
May god bless you and heal you.
